OverviewThe Associate Dean of the College of Education and Health Sciences is responsible for a broad range of responsibilities within the College of Education and Health Sciences including, but not limited to: oversight of accreditation activities; data base management; interfacing and working with IT and Student Affairs; coordination of events including orientations, commencement, end-of-year celebrations, white coat ceremonies, and CEHS promotional events including conferences and speaker series; evaluation and assessment of activities and student concerns. The Associate Dean meets regularly with the Dean to discuss initiatives, budgeting, strategic planning, and the day-to-day management of the CEHS. The Associate Dean is a member of the CEHS leadership team.
ResponsibilitiesThe following outlines the basic responsibilities of this position. Other duties to be assigned as necessary.
The Associate Dean assists in the successful planning, implementation, and evaluation of policies and programs, which assure the educational, research and service missions of CEHS and the University. They assist in the preparation of the budgetary proposals, which will assure adequate resources for fulfilling the mission of the College of Education and Health Sciences, according to the principles of sound academic and administrative management. The Associate Dean provides leadership for the teaching, research, service, and practice mission of the college within its four divisions - Education, Public Health, Physician Assistant, and Nursing. The Associate Dean collaborates and consults regularly with the Dean who is responsible for directing both the day-to-day activities and long-term activities and initiatives of the College of Education and Health Sciences.
Specific Responsibilities: Accreditation:
- In conjunction with the Dean, supervises all evaluation and assessment activities related to programs in the CEHS.
- Establishes policies, procedures, timelines, and communication channels within each individual program in the CEHS to comply with internal program reviews and external accreditation and regulatory standards.
- Assists Program Directors with the preparation and submission of all necessary documentation for accreditation, including activities for accreditation site.
- In conjunction with Program Directors, takes responsibility and primary oversight of accreditation activities, including construction of all required reports in consultation with the Dean.
- Attends all meetings related to accreditation of CEHS programs and university-wide accreditation activities and issues.
Student Affairs:
- Assists the Dean in conjunction with Program Directors, assists in the development and implementation of admission criteria for the programs.
- Collaborates with Program Directors in overseeing all events including orientations, commencement, end-of-year celebrations, white coat ceremonies, and CEHS promotional events including conferences and speaker series.
- Responsible as CEHS liaison on university wide Commencement Committee and organizing of all related commencement events in conjunction with Programs.
- Supports Program Directors with resolving student issues.
- In consultation with the Dean, addresses student concerns and serves as a member of both the Deans Student Advisory Council and the universitys CARE Team.
Faculty and Staff Affairs:
- Assists the Dean in reviewing the goals and objectives of all academic teaching, research, and service programs at least on an annual basis to ensure their agreement with the CEHS mission goals and objectives.
- Assists the Dean in collaboration with program directors in monitoring program effectiveness and faculty and staff workloads.
- Assists the Dean by serving as a resource and contact to Human Resources regarding all employee processes, including employee relations matters and implementing university policies.
Administrative Affairs:
- Assists the Dean with fiscal and budgetary activities within the CEHS including the submission of annual budget requests.
- In conjunction with the Dean, determine the activities required to achieve the goals of the CEHS and assigns responsibility and authority to perform these activities according to an established sequence or schedule; establishes criteria and procedures to assure that the college and its members are fulfilling assigned responsibilities in a manner within accepted policies of the university.
- Oversees all CEHS standing committees and groups as necessary to plan and carry out stated administrative policies and academic, research, and service goals of the university.
University Affairs:
- Assists the Dean in providing a formal link of communications between the CEHS and other parts of the university.
- In conjunction with the Dean, oversees and provides leadership related database management within the CEHS.
Grants and Extra-Mural Partnerships:
- Assists the Dean in providing research infrastructure and support; research collaboration across units, including developing grant proposals; and tracking funded research and research compliance.
- Assists the Dean in fund raising functions external to the university and identifies potential sources of revenue for the university through contacts with government, foundations, the local business community, and alumni groups.
- Assists the Dean in cultivating community partnerships, including serving on external boards and committees as a representative of the CEHS and the university.
- Represents the college at events, meetings, and activities - particularly when the Dean is unavailable.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists Dean in supervising all College of Education and Health Sciences all Deans direct reports.
QualificationsQUALIFICATION(S): Doctoral degree required, preferably in Public Health, Physician Assistant Studies, Nursing, Education, or related area of expertise. Minimum of three years of experience in higher education academic administration as an associate dean, assistant dean, program director, or department chair of a large academic department, a combination of the above, or equivalent higher education management experience.
