Job Description:        School Counselor

Classification:            Full Time, Salaried, Exempt (11 Months)

Office hours 8 am - 4:30 pm with the possibility of 1-2 days per week

11 am - 7 pm

Reports to:                 Assistant Head of School and Head of School

Job Summary:

The School Counselor provides short term, individual and/or group counseling to students in grades 9-12. The school counselor partners with school administration, faculty and staff, and health center, and works to ensure that wellness is integrated into the educational curriculum, programming, mission, values and promises of Foxcroft School. The School Counselor provides counseling services using competencies and professional  knowledge in an effort to assist students in learning healthy coping skills, self awareness, problem solving, responsibility, resiliency, self esteem and interpersonal skills, in order to support students’ healthy social/emotional growth and development.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide short-term individual and/or group counseling to students grades 9-12
• Consult and collaborate with parents, caregivers, and outside treatment providers
• Partner with the Health Center, Learning Center, deans, and administrators regarding the mental health needs of students.
• Co-teach health and wellness seminars and lead other co-curricular programming
• Facilitate crisis responses in urgent student or community mental health situations
• Consult regularly with teachers about student mental health needs, and participate in student support team meetings
• Refer to outside professionals for students needing psychotherapy, neuropsychological evaluations, or other social-emotional supports
• Lead the Safe Space team
• Participate on the Diversity Equity and Inclusion team

Professional Qualifications:

• A master’s or doctoral degree in psychology, social work, counseling, school counseling, or a related field is required.
• The counselor must be a licensed practitioner in their field of practice.
• Significant experience working as a counselor or therapist with diverse adolescents and families.
• Previous experience working in schools, collaborating closely with schools, or working in other multidisciplinary settings is preferred.
• Candidates should be knowledgeable about diversity, equity, and inclusion, and approach counseling through a multicultural lens.

While performing the duties of this position an incumbent is required to regularly remain sedentary for long periods of time in meetings and while processing information and paper work both manually and on a computer.

The employee is required to stand; walk; use hands and arms to reach and hands to type and manipulate a computer keyboard and mouse. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus. Additionally, the incumbent must be able to converse in clear English both written and orally, over a telephone and in person. The employee is regularly required to listen, physically direct, and speak.

Occasionally, an incumbent may be required to lift up to 25 pounds, traverse uneven terrain and climb stairs while moving about campus, bend and stoop. Work hours may vary and include days, nights, and weekends. Employees may be required to drive a vehicle for student needs and/or on School business. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet; however, variations in noise level may occur when the employee attends school functions such as assemblies, school dances, and other events.
