THE DEPARTMENTThe Office of Student Success provides leadership for multiple units focused on meeting the needs of Cal Poly Pomona's diverse student body. The Office of Student Success oversees the coordination of academic advising initiatives to achieve shared goals, and the development and implementation of academic intervention programs to help students make timely progress toward degree completion. Student Success provides oversight for academic and student success as related to academic policies, university advising, academic-related initiatives, and strategic planning. The office handles student petitions related to academic issues, including general academic petitions, retroactive withdrawals, grade appeals, academic renewal, and records the completion of culminating experiences. Student Success provides oversight for University Advising, the Bronco Advising Center, Student Communication, Advising Technology, Undeclared Advising, Early Alerts Programs, Graduation Pledge Programs, the Early Start Program, the Learning Resource Center; Bronco Tutoring; First Year Experience (FYE); Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Students United to Create a Community for Engineering and Science Success (STEM SUCCESS); Reading, Advising, and Mentoring Program (RAMP); and the University Writing Center. The office of Student Success collaborates with Academic Program, Enrollment Management Services, and College leaders to support students in meeting their academic goals.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESSTUDENT ADVISEMENT - Provide timely, focused advising to all students to ensure they stay on track to graduation and are able to successfully navigate university policies and procedures to meet their academic and career goals. In advising, utilize a combination of high-level analytical and interpersonal skills as well as independent judgement when developing effective and creative solutions to student problems.
- Assists with the Bronco Advising Center's drop-in general advising, available to all undergraduate students.
- Advises students on the relationship between General Education, major, and career goals with regard to the student's interests, skills, and abilities.
- Advises students on appropriate timing for meeting General Education, major, and other graduation requirements.
- Maintains knowledge of, interprets and explains complex academic policies and procedures.
- Counsel's students in academic difficulty and assists students in identifying challenges and creating strategies to improve their academic progress.
- Assists students in interpreting General Education/Graduation Requirement evaluations.
- Provide one-on-one, group, and online advising to students who are in academic difficulty or who have been identified via early alerts or graduation initiatives as needing interventions
- Collaborate with a broad range of institutional partners including College Associate Deans, Department Chairs, faculty, and staff, as well as the Registrar's Office, and staff from supplemental advising programs (including Athletics, International Center, Kellogg Honors College, and CPP Pledge Programs) to provide support to students.
- Use e-advising tools including CPP Connect Degree Progress Report and others to advise students and educate them on academic planning.
- Provide accurate and timely maintenance of student petitions.
CAMPUS AND COLLEGE PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS - Serve as an active member of the College and University advising community. Regularly participate in Academic Advisor Council and attend its meetings, as well as advisor trainings, webinars, and workshops.
- Participate in supplemental advising committees and working groups, as appropriate.
- Assist in the coordination and facilitation of campus and college programs for incoming freshman and transfer students, including orientation programs; and for first year students, including First Year Experience (FYE) programs.
- Serve as liaison to one or more academic departments to provide updates on procedures and policies as well as review curriculum information to be communicated with students. Provide professional advice to department chairs and faculty regarding student issues.
DOCUMENTATION AND REPORTING - Provide robust documentation of advising interactions, interventions, and programming via CPP Connect and other available tools. Summarize all information in annual reports and provide data-informed recommendations for improvements.
- Utilize reporting tools such as CPP Connect and Tableau to identify students in need of support and track progress toward improving their academic outcomes.
QUALIFICATIONS - A bachelor's degree (preferably in student personnel, counseling, psychology, or a related field)
- Two (2) years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field. (A Master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience. Additional specialized and relevant experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis).
Ability to independently prioritize, plan and organize work in a fast-paced environment. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to provide direct programs and/or services to a diverse student population. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to compile, prepare, write and review reports. Proficiency using standard office software packages (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite). Familiarity working with school-based record/data systems/software (example: PeopleSoft). Ability to understand, interpret and apply moderately complex rules, regulations, and procedures. Knowledge of critical issues impacting higher education. Commitment to educational equity and student success. Skill in working effectively with multiple and diverse constituencies to create and sustain positive learning experiences for students. Strong organizational skills, high level of energy and flexibility, and the ability to handle multiple assignments, manage time effectively, and work independently and as part of a coordinated team.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - Master's degree in Educational Leadership, College Student Personnel, Educational Counseling, or related field.
- Knowledge of General Education in the California State University system
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends
- Experience in academic advising, teaching, and/or counseling; experience working with low-income and diverse student populations; proficiency in PeopleSoft, and Microsoft applications.
