ESLA is seeking a teacher who will serve as the Chair of the Literature and Writing Department and who will teach courses in Literature and Rhetoric and Composition to students in grades 9-12.
The ideal candidate has some or all of the following characteristics:
A commitment to equity and inclusion.
Robust knowledge of literature, history, and theory, with multilingual and intercultural awareness.
Expertise in best teaching practices in literature and writing across grades 6-12.
Experience in academic leadership, including coaching middle and upper school teachers on best instructional practices, curricular development, budget management, and meeting facilitation.
Demonstrated success as a manager, and a willingness to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
Demonstrated success in meeting the needs of ethnically, culturally, socioeconomically, and linguistically diverse students.
Experience designing curricula that can connect literary aesthetics, cultural movements, historical events, and ideas to events across geographies and time periods.
Desire to work collaboratively with Humanities instructors to design, revise, and implement a burgeoning Humanities Curriculum.
Demonstrated excellence and creativity in selecting texts and designing assessments that support students in developing a comparativist approach to their study of the humanities.
Responsibilities:
Course load: 4 Upper School sections of Literature and Rhetoric and Composition
Coaching, observation, and management of Literature and Writing Department faculty.
Develop, revise, and ensure effective implementation of Literature and Writing curriculum, both working from existing curricular frameworks and through the development of new materials.
Participate in hiring processes by helping draft job descriptions and participating in the interview process.
Oversee the development and implementation of a holistic vision and set of goals fo the growth and sustainability of ESLA’s literature and writing curriculum.
Work in collaboration with the History Department Chair to establish cross-departmental norms of assignment design, writing process, writing feedback, and assignment rubrics.
Participate in an after-school (3:30–5:30 p.m.) program two days a week (sports, clubs, performing arts, academic support, etc.)
Willingness to serve as an advisor to a small group of students.
Attend regular community gatherings, including, but not limited to, meetings, Chapel, lunch, and major Feast Days.
Requirements:
All or most of the following:
* Bachelor’s degree in English, Comparative Literature, Ethnic Studies, or a related field. *A desire to work in a creative, collaborative, innovative environment. *Strong leadership and organizational skills. *Candidates will preferably have a master’s degree in a relevant field of study, 3+ years of teaching experience, or a CA teaching credential.
