The ASUC Student Union is the hub of student life on the UC Berkeley campus. Committed to all students and an inclusive campus community, the Student Union enhances the student experience by providing quality services and programs that foster experiential learning opportunities and ensures a balanced learning environment. The ASUC Student Union at Berkeley includes a multi-building complex with a mission to provide a welcoming environment and co-curricular experience for UC Berkeley students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors. The complex includes auxiliary services functions (including retail and owner-operated businesses), multi-purpose programming space, general lounge spaces, information functions, the LEAD Center, Public Service Center, the Multicultural Center and other service centers, administrative units, offices for student organizations, the ASUC student government and GA. The Student Union is financially supported through student fees and income from retail operations including the Cal Student Store, retail operations, food service and catering, vending, and a variety of self-operated business units such as the Berkeley Art Studio, Creative Lab, Berkeley Audio Visual, Event Services, and Goldie’s Coffee Shop. These commercial activities generate approximately $3.5 million of revenue. Additionally, the Student Union provides financial and accounting services for Berkeley’s student government (the ASUC and GA which are a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit association), student organizations, and student publications.
The Associate Dean of Students and Executive Director of the ASUC Student Union (A.D./E.D.) serves as a member of the Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students (AVC & DOS) team, reporting directly to the AVC & DOS.
The AVC & Dean of Students team is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing programs, services, resources, activities, experiential learning opportunities for students in their non-academic life at the university, including student advocacy, wellness programs, new students services, career center, student legal services, student union, public service, student conduct, support and intervention, leadership development, residential life, recreational sports, student co-curricular advising and engagement, and crisis management.
The A.D./E.D of the ASUC Student Union also has a dual reporting line to the ASUC Student Union Board made up of representatives from staff, faculty, and student government (the Associated Students of the University of California or ASUC and Graduate Assembly or GA). The Student Union, in partnership with the ASUC and GA, supports student learning, development, and community building by collaborating and engaging with students, campus partners, and the greater community. The A.D./E.D. has budgetary oversight for approximately $9 million.
Areas of broad oversight for the A.D./E.D. include the following:
The A.D./E.D. advises the ASUC Executive Officers as well as GA Executive Officers and the ASUC Student Union Board Chair on matters relating to the commercial activities, campus policies and the Student Union business operations.
The ASUC Student Union Board establishes policy for and provides oversight over all ASUC Student Union commercial activities, as set forth in the ASUC Commercial Activities and Student Services Agreement (“CASSA”) between the ASUC and the University of California, Berkeley. The A.D./E.D. meets regularly with the Board, providing updates on the overall financial health of the SU and the status of commercial activities.
The A.D./E.D. serves as an ex-officio member of the Board and will advise and assist the Board Chair in preparation for monthly SU meetings, including but not limited to setting monthly agendas, planning of Board retreats, and training of new Board members. The A.D./E.D. will take advisement from the Board regarding retail and vendor contracts and commercial opportunities that ensure the Student Union’s financial solvency. The Board must ultimately approve such contracts and agreements. The A.D./E.D. will also work collaboratively with Board committees and will provide timely information about issues and concerns that relate to the Student Union’s functioning.
The A.D./E.D. is responsible for formulating the vision and strategic plan for the Student Union and for supporting programs, activities, and services that promote community, individual growth, responsible citizenship, and a global perspective for a student body of approximately 42,000+ students.
Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students, the A.D./E.D. will work with the AVC & DOS to develop and oversee the unit's strategic planning by serving as a key staff member on the AVC & Dean's central leadership team. The A.D./E.D. is accountable to both the AVC & DOS and the Student Union Board for fiscal integrity and efficient administration of all ASUC commercial and student services. The A.D./E.D. is an important partner to campus leadership and may serve on various campus committees on issues related to space management, student experience and campus retail/business partnerships. The A.D./E.D. may also serve as a member of the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Senior Council.
Strategic Planning and Management
Responsible for strategic planning and vision for the Student Union.
Responsible for overall management of the Student Union staffing including HR oversight.
Manages, plans, and administers the administrative operations of the Student Union which include the following functions: facilities, student services, leases, human resources, and budgetary financial oversight.
Responsible for the overall planning and administration of all commercial activities, including the provision of retail space, food service contracts, and self-run businesses.
Through the management of direct report staff, will oversee negotiations and management of all business leases and contracts with third party providers and serve as the contract administrator for the student store management contract.
Oversees the development and management of the budget and related accounts within policies and guidelines. Reviews monthly expenditure reports and strategizes with the Director of Admin & Finance (and members of the Student Union senior leadership team) to create opportunities for generation of new revenue sources to meet increased service needs.
Provides strategic guidance and advising of the Student Union Board Chair and student government executives as it relates to commercial activities and space planning for the Student Union complex.
Works with the Director of Admin & Finance to develop the annual budget and obtains approval from the Board and appropriate University offices.
Develops and oversees the implementation of policy and procedural changes in the administration of the Student Union and ensures compliance with IRS, State of California, and applicable non-profit codes and regulations.
Oversees all marketing plans and promotion of services (in support of the Marketing Coordinator) within the Student Union and directs the planning of partnerships with building tenants and with University departments in marketing efforts.
Provide oversight for all ASUC Student Union construction related projects, in support of the Director of Facilities and Maintenance.
Develop and assess plans for long-range space allocations, facility modernization and refurbishing plans, and the creation of audit and control systems that are in alignment with University policies and procedures.
Develop and maintain effective space utilization plans. Conduct surveys of student needs as appropriate. Recommend new or expanded services, and oversee space renovation, new construction, or relocation of services to meet student needs.
Responsible for setting and maintaining policies governing the Student Union operations, administration, finances, facilities, student services, and commercial activities.
Provide leadership in the development of goals, objectives and direction for Student Union programs including but not limited to Event Services, Art Studio, Creative Lab, and Berkeley AV.
ASUC Student Union Business Operations
Responsible for ensuring the ASUC Student Union operates within budget and in compliance with audit requirements.
Ensure that facilities remain compliant with all applicable Federal, State, University of California, and campus policies, procedures, laws and regulations.
Oversees the planning and activities of building maintenance management which include custodial staff and/or work with contracted vendors for these services and establish sound working relationships with other service departments on campus (i.e. Physical Plant).
Responsible for risk management associated with programs and facility operations of the ASUC Student Union.
Consults as needed with legal counsel as appropriate on policies and contracts.
Partners with campus Real Estate as appropriate on leases and retail contracts.
Conduct periodic and or on-going assessments and provides reports to the ASUC Student Union Board and AVC & DOS.
Communicate with the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs to provide updates on Student Union operations and finances as appropriate.
Responsible for business development and oversees vendor negotiations as appropriate.
Associate Dean of Students
Interacts with higher-level management, stakeholders and customers on matters concerning several functional areas.
Serves as a member of the AVC & Dean of Students leadership team and provides support and consultation to the AVC & Dean of Students office.
Serves on rotation as an on-call dean for after-hours crises and emergencies.
Serves as a back-up first responder to student activism and protests.
Serves as a member of the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs leadership team.
Serves on campus-wide, divisional, and AVC & DOS portfolio committees.
Develops and maintains appropriate relationships throughout campus, the ASUC and GA to ensure the Student Union serves to support students and programs consistent with the campus mission and strategic direction.
Participate in professional development and state, regional, and national professional associations as appropriate for the role.
Participate in campus and divisional philanthropy efforts, especially in support of the Student Union.
Evaluates the delivery of services to students, faculty and staff and adjusts as necessary.
Leadership & Management
Establishes sound working relationships with individuals, departments, divisions, and groups both on and off campus. These relationships include student leaders, faculty, staff, alumni, Associated Students, University Administration, Student Affairs, academic departments, professional colleagues, and community representatives.
Solicits and utilizes informed input in the development and evaluations of goals, programs, and services of the Student Union.
Provides leadership and guidance to create an atmosphere of collaboration, cooperation, cohesion, and teamwork.
Works with various committees on planning team-building, DEIB activities, and goal alignment across units and businesses.
Manages staff morale to ensure staff and business goals are met.
Works with subordinate management to ensure staff are able to effectively and efficiently complete their tasks and goals.
Significant number of years of experience in Student Unions, Student Affairs, or an environment that utilizes similar skills and expertise with evidence of professional growth and progress in increasing responsibilities
Experience that demonstrates effective organization management including skills in supervision of teams, strategic planning, negotiation, communication,and financial management; demonstrated ability to lead and direct a complex organization providing programs and services that essential to stakeholders and a diverse community
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse constituent groups
Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively motivate and influence others and to develop and maintain high standards of customer service; excellent leadership skills to inspire others toward the same goals and maintain accountability
Strong oral and written communication skills, including strong public skills and the ability to represent the key constituencies effectively with media outlets
Demonstrated experience addressing liability and risk management, including crisis response
Strong commitment to principles and values of diversity, equity, and inclusion
Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, Business Administration, Communications, Public Administration or related field or equivalent experience/training
Experience building strong relationships within a university community
Experience with student government and operating in an environment of student activism; experience advocating for student needs
Expertise with business operations, entrepreneurship, and/or revenue generating / auxiliary departments
