We are seeking an Academic Advisor who will report to the Director of Academic Services. This position is primarily responsible for academic advising of students in the two-year, full-time Master of Arts in International Relations degrees and may assist with advising needs in other degree programs. As a primary point of contact for student inquiries, the person will be responsible for accurately conveying degree and program information and school policies via in-person interactions, over the phone, email, and by other electronic means. The person will maintain thorough written records and will coordinate with administrative offices to assist in student success.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Student Advising - 75%
- Serve as an academic advisor to a large caseload of MAIR students and other degree populations as needed
- Advise students on academic policies, registration procedures, and course selection
- Assist students in successfully progressing with and completing their academic program and degree requirements
- Keep students apprised of add/drop, audit, and withdrawal deadlines, procedures, and requirements
- Understand, convey, and help uphold all academic regulations and policies
- Meet with students to develop success strategies (e.g. time management, study skills, and learning and academic strategies)
- Counsel students in using and understanding academic advising tools such as degree audit, SIS self-service, the student portal, and academic advising tools and technologies
- Make recommendations regarding course load and progression toward satisfactory progress
- Communicate regularly with assigned students via email, text, or other medium to check-in, encourage and track progress
- Coordinate enrollment and course exceptions requested by faculty or academic programs and ensure they meet the curricular requirements
Academic Records Maintenance – 10%
- Maintain accurate and complete written records pertaining to student interaction
- Monitor advising group inbox and respond to general and specific inquiries in a timely manner; redirect or escalate issues as needed
- Support the backend of the Degree Audit system through updates and maintenance
- Collaborate with other offices to resolve administrative issues related to academic records as they relate to student's academic progress
- Develop additional advising resources to support the office
Liase With Other Administrative Offices – 10%
- Work with the Office of Admissions, Office of Global Careers, Office of Student Life and other administrative offices to gather information on student status and, as needed, collaborate on potential solutions for student issues
- Ensure these offices understand current program requirements and remain aware of curricular and course changes
- Partner with faculty to keep them informed of student progress or academic issues
Other Duties as Assigned – 5%
- Assist in other functions necessary to the operation of the Office of Academic Affairs as related the MA student success and satisfaction.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
- Master's Degree in Higher Education, Counseling or related field required.
- Three years of related experience required, preferably in a university and/or educational environment counseling and advising graduate or professional students
- Prior experience working in a higher education environment preferred
- Prior experience working in collaboration with Registrar, Admissions, Financial Aid, Student Affairs and Career Services preferred
- Exceptional office management skills including delegation, time management, attention to detail and organizational skills

- Excellent oral communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with students, faculty and all levels of administration and of diverse cultures
- Excellent written communication skills, including experience in editing, writing, proposal and report preparation
- Demonstrated ability to connect and build rapport with other service-oriented, technical and operational teams
- Ability to adapt to new and rapidly changing situations
- Ability to handle sensitive and personal student issues
- The individual must be able to command authority and will work with adult populations
