P/T K-5 Mandarin Teacher
Academic Year 2022-2023 (0.50 FTE)
The ideal candidate will be an experienced, accomplished K-5 teacher who can teach Mandarin, joining our growing World Language department. As we grow our Mandarin program, we have extended our Mandarin offerings into grades K-5. This teacher must be experienced in numerous modalities of instruction in which learning is academically rigorous, engaging, lively, and communication-based. In addition to teaching, faculty also serve as a mentor/advisor to a small group of students, moderate an activity or club, and participate in activities that support the school program.
Responsibilities of a K-5 Mandarin Teacher
The School’s faculty strives to set for its students an example of high ethical standards, moral behavior, and devotion to excellence. This responsibility involves the following:
To maintain a climate of trust and mutual respect which encourages students to risk the questions, the opinions and mistakes necessary to learn.
To offer students clear educational objectives for each course supported by appropriate assignments, activities and evaluation.
To accurately assess each student’s progress and inform the student, the parents, the academic mentor and the appropriate administrator immediately of any serious difficulty.
To show concern for and nurture the student’s intellectual, social, emotional, ethical, and aesthetic development.
To work collaboratively with colleagues within the World Language department and within the Lower School.
A teacher’s effectiveness in the programs of the School includes various activities in addition to teaching and classroom duties, such as:
Teaching load: 3 classes
Readiness to act as a mentor/advisor
Participation in and support of school activities
Providing extra help to students who need it
Communication of suggestions directly to the administration
Encouragement of the efforts of colleagues
Concern for the appearance of the classroom and of the grounds
Promptness in meeting all School obligations (arrival in good time, meeting classes, returning papers),
Flexibility and cooperation in furthering academic or extracurricular programs.
Attendance at School activities, such as plays, concerts, athletic events, etc., is very strongly encouraged.
Regular attendance at faculty meetings and open houses is expected and required
Some evening and weekend work
Bachelor’s degree in Mandarin or related subject
Previous experience teaching a variety of Mandarin courses at the middle and high school level
Proficiency with technology
Master's degree in related subject or education; California Single Subject Teaching Credential
