An expert in cell and molecular biology will independently manage the production, validation, storage, and archiving of plasmid DNA, viral vectors, cell lines, and other reagents in support of a large multidisciplinary laboratory studying gene and cell therapies for neurodegenerative disease and spinal cord injury. Will independently design and troubleshoot assays, perform routine cell and molecular biology techniques, and supervise and train junior colleagues. Must be methodical, organized, and have excellent communication skills. Will efficiently manage molecular biology resources and make independent intellectual contributions to the design, development, and utilization of novel tools for diverse research programs spanning neurobiology, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and animal models of neurological disease.
Theoretical background in Biology or Neuroscience as typically attained by a bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience in molecular biology techniques, including production and purification of plasmid DNA, restriction digest, subcloning, qPCR and RT-qPCR, genotyping, Southern blot, protein purification, Western blot, and ELISA.
Experience in cell culture and sterile technique, including routine subculture of immortalized cell lines and stem cells, transfection and electroporation of cultured cells, live imaging of cultured cells, Immunocytochemical staining of cultured cells, and other cell-based assays.
Ability to organize physical stocks maintain electronic databases of plasmids, primers, cell lines, viral vectors, and other reagents. Ability to perform electronic record keeping, use Snapgene software for DNA analysis, and learn new programs/applications with minimal direction.
Ability to communicate effectively with biotechnology companies such as Addgene, Genscript, Vigene, Vector Builder, and IDT to order, receive, validate, and archive plasmid DNA and viral vectors.
Proven ability to perform complex experiments with attention to detail, analyze results, independently troubleshoot protocols, and adhere to regulatory procedures.
Excellent verbal, written, and electronic communication skills. Ability and willingness to both work independently and collaborate effectively with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students. Excellent interpersonal skills, openness to criticism, and willingness to compromise.
Knowledge of basic lab safety requirements/procedures; EH&S regulations and methods for handling, clean-up, and waste disposal for biohazardous materials.
Proven ability to manage the daily operations of a lab. Experience planning, coordinating, and directing the work of junior staff and other lab personnel and organizing professional training for the lab. Ability to coach and train subordinates; willingness to share information and serve as a mentor.
Experience in routine lab maintenance including ordering and maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies, maintaining detailed records, and handling audit requests.
