The Center for Research in Biological Systems (CRBS) is a UCSD organized research unit (ORU) that exists to provide human resources, high technology equipment, and administrative services to scientists researching cell structure and function relationships in central nervous system processes, cardiovascular networking, and muscular contraction through multiple scales and modalities.
CRBS facilitates an interdisciplinary infrastructure in which people from biology, medicine, chemistry, and physics can work with those from computer science and information technologies in collaborative research. Researchers share interests in the study of complex biological systems at many scales, from the structures of enzymes, proteins, and the body's chemical communications network at atomic and molecular levels, to an organism's physiology, strength, and support at cellular and tissue levels.
Independently manages program activities of the National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research (NCMIR), an NIH BRAIN Technology Refinement and Dissemination National Resource, related to the characterization, improvement and application of novel specimen preparation and advanced multiscale imaging methods, including state-of-the-art correlated light and electron microscopy techniques. Provides research, development and project management support in this area. Oversees and coordinates research activities of NCMIR scientists and collaborative investigators towards the completion of an assigned portfolio of user projects. Coordinates and develops collaboration strategies with local, national and international research groups to advance correlated light and electron microscopy techniques. Helps to develop and submit original research proposals to government and corporate agencies to secure funding. Contributes as a Guest lecturer and area expert in courses taught in the Neuroscience graduate program by CRBS/NCMIR faculty members.
Coordinates with project PI's and various working group leads to ensure that project science tasks identified by project members are on track and making adequate progress. Work with PI's to ensure that milestones defined are achievable within the constraints of the available project resources. Recommend new technical areas to be discussed and promotes more discussions in existing areas.
Independently manages an assigned portfolio of Collaborative and Service Projects (CSP) for NCMIR. Serves as a single-point-of-contact for associated collaborating investigators. Triages the use of NCMIR resources. Updates the resource applications database and project descriptions. Tracks resource metrics and assists the resource Executive Director to assemble yearly progress reports.
Independently oversees a moderately sized academic or research program and represent the program to outside organizations. Oversees all administrative operations, finance, human resources and facilities for program. Designs and develops major program components, and administers the full range of the program's operational requirements. Works with faculty on formulating short-term planning and procedures. Supports the development and organization of conferences and other public forums. Works under direction of Principal Investigator to establish center agenda, funding, objectives.
Nine (9) years of related experience, education/training, OR an Advanced degree in related area plus three (3) years of related experience/training.
Academic background and experience in selected area of research preferred.
Thorough knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
Demonstrated fundraising experience.
In-depth knowledge and experience supporting scientific projects requiring the application of multi-faceted scientific imaging methods (microscopies), techniques and resources.
Experience and knowledge of specimen preparation protocols for correlated light and electron microscopy.
