Provides administrative support for the DUS and DGS as the first point of contact between students and the Department.
Initiates and supports outreach efforts to undergraduates in an effort to sustain and grow the number of majors and minors for the Department. Develops new programming to support these efforts.
Serves as a resource to undergraduates and graduate students with respect to interpreting program requirements and ensures students are on track to meet degree requirements; regularly meets with undergraduate students to advise regarding program requirements, bachelor's thesis projects, faculty advisors, course selection, and student concentration statement. Makes oneself available to student drop-ins as necessary.
Facilitates graduate student review sessions with DGS, Department Administrator, and Chair. Flags issues that need to be addressed and proposes and implements solutions.
Works with College advisors to coordinate and confirm University-wide undergraduate requirements and the English majorâ™s program planning.
Determines when an intervention with the faculty advisor, DUS, or DGS may be appropriate to help students stay on course.
Advises undergraduates on course selection, program plans, including bachelor's thesis projects and study abroad. Reviews course petitions and student research statements.
Serves as a liaison between undergraduates, DUS, college advisors, and the Study Abroad office.
Serves as a liaison between graduate students, the DGS, and the Chair.
Receives and sorts online applications to the graduate program based on knowledge of fields andÂ genres in English literature.
Oversees instructor roster management during acceptance and waitlist period. Reviews final rosters to ensure student requirements are met.
Analyzes data related to course application numbers, waitlists, and final enrollment numbers. Prepares reports for curriculum and planning committee and makes recommendations based on findings.
Develops a preliminary map of course scheduling needs by quarter based on analysis of enrollment reports, student requirement needs, and holes in programming (for instance, identifying that there are not enough Shakespeare courses for students to meet requirements within the next two years).
Reviews administrative records concerning undergraduate and graduate enrollment and ensures completion of program requirements; produces data analysis from reports as requested.
In collaboration with faculty career liaison, creates and organizes events and programming for alumni â“ and career-related programs.
Plans at least two undergraduate events per quarter (for example, a write-in or major information session).
Collaborates in the (re)design and update of Departmentâ™s website, including writing new content.
Engages in outreach to undergraduate and graduate alumni.
Provides support in research around the development of a proprietary graduate and/or fellowship program and related reports/presentations.
With the Department Administrator, oversees the work of the Department Assistant, Student Affairs Assistant, student worker(s), graduate student preceptors, and career preceptor as needed.
With the DGS, develops agendas for graduate student town hall meetings once a quarter.
Works closely with undergraduate steering committee to understand the needs of the students and implements programming to support such needs.
Plans and conducts quality assurance reviews and recommends changes as appropriate.
Analyzes program budgets and uses a moderate/high level of authority to recommend or makes budgetary recommendations.
Performs other related work as needed.
Bachelorâ™s degree with knowledge of the field.
General relevant office experience.
Working knowledge using the internet and MS products, e.g., Word, Excel.
Prior experience advising students
Previous experience working in support of student services.
Background working in or attending a University program.
Background working with academics.
Technical Skills or Knowledge:
Familiarity with graphic design programs.
Advanced literary and numeracy.
Advocate for students and excellent judgment to know when to escalate student concerns.
Data analysis, scheduling.
