The Field School is a coed, college-preparatory, 6-12 school in Washington, DC recognized for its approach to education, and its ability to meet the needs of a wide range of learners. The school enrolls approximately 350 students. This position is a member of the Student Support Team that works to ensure the school meets its mission with all students. This position reports to the Director of Student Support Services. This is a 12-month position.
We seek an educator/counselor who has a passion for creating positive culture and climate, who is eager to simultaneously lead program development and stay connected to the students through advisory work and counseling. This coordinator builds and maintains robust SEL capacity in the advisory team and works alongside a School Counselor to address the needs of the student population.
The heart of any student support role is in responsive work, attending to issues as they arise. Working with the student support team the coordinator will consult on these student needs, helping students and families integrate skills for greater social and emotional awareness across their lives.
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Leading the school’s efforts to:
integrate SEL into the fabric of the school
Collaborate with colleagues outside the student support team to enrich the SEL components of their curriculum and instruction
teach SEL alongside advisors
support faculty and staff with SEL-based professional development
teach and organize middle and upper school components of the health curriculum; educate students about healthy decision making, especially with regard to choices surrounding tobacco, drugs, alcohol, and sex;
provide parent education that deepens parents’ understanding of Field’s programs as they relate to advisory, decision-making, health and wellness, and parenting; and
Partnering with the other school counselor:
utilize clinical knowledge and constructs to collaborate with teachers, parents, administrators, and outside professionals to establish developmentally appropriate strategies for supporting students academically, emotionally, socially, and behaviorally;
intervene when a student or students require responsive services, including counseling, consultation, referral, and/or information;
interface as necessary with outside mental health resources as well as local and state agencies responsible for providing services to children in need.
Working with school leadership to:
coordinate faculty and staff training and evaluation for advisory and other social-emotional aspects of the school’s program;
serve as back-up for other middle and upper school administrators when necessary.
Collaborating with appropriate others to:
maintain continuity and consistency of the 6-12 program, including advisory programming between middle, and upper divisions;
actively participate in and, with others, lead Field’s efforts to build an increasingly multicultural school community;
participate in admission and enrollment processes as needed.
Candidates for the position should have significant related experience and the appropriate degree(s), preferably in school counseling, social work, or school psychology; excellent oral and written communication skills; a kind, firm, empathetic demeanor; a collaborative, flexible nature; and a demonstrated comfort with and commitment to multicultural practices.
