The Moores Cancer Center is one of just 49 in the United States to hold a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. As such, it ranks among the top centers in the nation conducting basic and clinical cancer research, providing advanced patient care and serving the community through outreach and education programs.
The Cancer Center's mission is to translate promising scientific discoveries into new and better options for the care of patients with cancer. The Center supports one of the broadest ranges of cancer activities in the nation – from fundamental and translational cancer research in molecular genetics and advanced molecular therapeutics, and from population studies of cancer incidence to community education about cancer prevention and risk reduction.
Under minimal supervision, independently performs research duties in an Oncology/Urology research lab, specializing in testicular cancer research. Perform experiments, make observations, and record experimental data related to research projects. Use molecular biology to develop plasmid and viral based gene transfer vectors. Perform cell-based assays for tumor targeting treatments based on in depth review of the literature and knowledge of nuclear hormone-based and signal transduction pathway targeting therapeutics and chemistry. In addition, responsible for composing and revising publications; presenting research findings at academic conferences; and writing and revising funding/grant proposals.
Perform animal studies including breeding transgenic mice, injections, and maintaining and screening transgenic mouse colony. Process in vivo fluorescent and bioluminescent imaging, necropsy, tissue trimming and histology. Prepare tissue cultures of primary lymphocytes and propagation of tumor cell lines. Extract RNA, reverse transcribe cDNA, perform mini preps of plasmids and their analysis by gel. Perform basic cellular immunology tests to assess immunity such as FACS and CFSE proliferative assays, and automatic cells counting. Media and buffer preparation. Maintain lab records and inventory/order supplies.
