The new Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science is dedicated to health and social equity and has over 80 primary salaried faculty, 25 secondary faculty, 200+ personnel, 200 postgraduate students, and 550 undergraduate majors. The School includes activities in the Public Health disciplines of Behavioral Medicine, Biostatistics & Bioinformatics, Epidemiology, Global Health, Health Policy, Health Equity, Public Mental Health, and Environmental and Climate Health. The School administers two PhD programs (Public Health and Biostatistics), a Master of Public Health professional degree program, an MS in Biostatistics, the only Health Sciences undergraduate program (BSPH), an MAS in Leadership of Healthcare Organizations run in conjunction with UCSD Extension, and a Preventive Medicine residency program.
The School has strong collaborative research programs facilitated by Research Centers of Excellence focused on Wireless and Population Health Systems, Health Promotion and Equity, Women's Health, and Tobacco Control, and has extensive collaborations with the School of Medicine, Skaggs School of Pharmacy, Jacobs School of Engineering, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Moores Cancer Center, the Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute, and with other partners across the UC San Diego campus. Partnerships with the community and health agencies are fundamental to the School. The School houses five recharge cores providing services to UCSD and external customers, and the School's faculty and academics hold ~$125M total awarded grants and contracts.
The Director, Public Health & Innovation Initiatives, oversees cross-cutting initiatives in public health and human-centered design that support health promotion and health equity. The Director will be a technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in community health and human-centered design, including experience with collective impact and/or other coalition-building practices that support community-centered and community-driven initiatives. Connecting the HWSPH with partner initiatives across UCSD and the broader region, the Director sets strategic direction for and applies problem-solving skills to challenges and opportunities that require analysis of unique issues that may be without precedent.
Under the general direction of the HWSPH Associate Dean of Community Partnerships, in partnership with the CCHE Executive Director and The Design Lab Associate Director, the incumbent has broad and independent responsibilities to oversee programming intersecting public health and human-centered design for multiple initiatives, such as the San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative. The Director will oversee administration, finances, and human resources, including designing and developing major program components, and administering the program's full range of operational requirements. The Director develops the strategic framework for public health and design initiatives spanning the San Diego region and provides a supportive environment for staff to implement work plans, research activities, and community programs. The Director manages the budget and subcontracts, supports grant writing and sustainability efforts to secure other funding sources, and provides human resource support for staff recruitment and promotion.
In addition, the Director will oversee additional programming supporting design and public health synergies, such as cross-border initiatives to elevate design across the San Diego/Tijuana region, catalyzed by the region's binational bid to become a World Design Capital. Through the identification of new partnerships and ongoing support of existing initiatives, the Director will develop programming that elevates the visibility and impact of initiatives applying human-centered design to public health challenges, with an emphasis on projects addressing health and racial equity and social justice.
The Director will be highly experienced as a hands-on and collaborative leader who can facilitate and direct activities among diverse stakeholders such as physicians and other health providers, researchers, design practitioners, and community leaders.
Terminal degree in a related filed (PhD, JD, MD, etc.)
Five (5+) or more years of relevant experience.
Must have a valid CA driver's license and acceptable driving record.
