JOB SUMMARY: This position is accountable for collecting, verifying, and entering correct patient information into multiple systems. Performs patient registration/pre-registration duties for all types of patient admission, and obtains appropriate signature for all necessary consents required. Verifies guarantors address; determines insurance eligibility; collects co-payment and deductibles, and notifies the payer of an admit. Secures reference or authorization number prior to, during, or post admission. Addresses financial concerns and makes referrals to appropriate financial counselors and/or departments. Provides patient information to hospital departments, physicians, and other medical service providers as required. Audits admissions/discharges. Acquires payments/deposits on patient accounts following hospital policies and procedures. Provides assistance to parents demonstrating problems with their hospital stay and refers to the appropriate department for additional support providing patient/family education as needed to facilitate hospital goals, policies, and procedures. Participates in the cross-training program to be able to function at multiple tasks within the admitting department. Performs general clerical duties including: answering telephones, filing, copying, faxing, and stocking supplies.
REQUIREMENTS: This position requires a High School Diploma/GED. Minimum one (1) year general clerical experience, in a business for healthcare environment or professional office involving public contact is required. Minimum two (2) years experience in hospital admissions department or related preferred. Admitting counselor will need to process insurance information and medical records, us the phone system, and learn Valley Children's specific software. Must possess computer experience including: spreadsheets, data entry and work processing. Must be able to work tactfully and professionally with patients, family members and all other hospital staff they encounter. Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills. Understanding of the overall diversity of our patient population and treating everyone with respect and courtesy. Ability to problem solve, multi-task efficiently and organize and prioritize multiple tasks.
