As a member of the Global Recruitment and Outreach team, the International Admission Counselor & Coordinator for Global Graduate Recruitment and Outreach is responsible for the development and implementation of innovative and effective recruitment initiatives, programs, and procedures to ensure Portland State University meets enrollment goals. The Admissions Counselor works extensively and collaboratively with key constituencies to ensure optimal effectiveness throughout the recruitment, admission, and enrollment process. This position has specific assignments related to coordination of international graduate recruitment and the recruitment of international transfer students already within the United States. The position also shares in standard admission and outreach duties. As with the rest of the international recruitment team, the incumbent will seek collaborations with high school and community college personnel, community organization partnerships, as well as independent oversight of assigned international recruitment territories.
The International Admission Counselor & Coordinator for Global Graduate Recruitment and Outreach will represent the University and its academic programs and services to prospective students and their families, high school and college personnel, partner institutions, community organizations, and the public. The admissions counselor must be effective at collaborating with leaders from within the university to increase international enrollment while independently planning other recruitment strategies including high school visits, agent meetings, area receptions, and individual meetings. The International Admission Counselor & Coordinator for Global Graduate Recruitment and Outreach is a front-line service provider with primary responsibility for student admission counseling. International recruitment travel and the management of assigned international territories are additional key components of the incumbent’s work. The position requires a significant level of independent judgement and autonomy with regard to work planning; it also requires frequent representation of the University to students, families, educational counselors, staff, and application of admission policy through the secondary review of admissions applications.
The International Admission Counselor & Coordinator for Global Graduate Recruitment and Outreach will travel internationally and meet with and counsel prospective international students regarding issues related to the freshmen, transfer, and post-baccalaureate admission process, including students in PSU’s Intensive English Language Program. The international admission counselor will also work closely with key international partners to the University’s international enrollment goals, including but not limited to EducationUSA officials, sponsoring student agencies, international recruitment organizations and associations, agents, and key internal PSU constituencies.
The position is a full-time professional academic staff position within Enrollment Management and reports to the Director of Global Recruitment and Admissions. The International Admission Counselor & Coordinator for Global Graduate Recruitment and Outreach must have strong written and oral communication skills, exceptional organizational and project management experience, and a demonstrated ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds, who have varied exposure to higher education is required.
• Bachelor’s degree and one to three years of related experience • Demonstrated experience working with international students at the high school or college level in a non-instructional capacity • Possession of a valid State-issued driver’s license
Professional Competencies: • Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong interpersonal presentation, and organizational skills. • Ease in using technology for communication, presentation and coordination of virtual events and meetings, record keeping and management of data. • Demonstrated ability to interact cooperatively and sensitively with individuals from other cultures, ethnic groups, lifestyles and backgrounds. • Ability to critically and logically analyze, synthesizes, interpret and extrapolate admission data, regulations, policies, procedures, and protocols. • Ability to manage multiple priorities, pay attention to detail and produce desired results.
• Master’s degree with one to three years of related experience. • Two to three years directly-related experience working with undergraduate student populations in an admissions or recruitment setting Experience with software systems such as Ellucian Banner (or equivalent), Slate, mobile technology, and social media • Demonstrated competency and proficiency in a language other than English.
