As a unit within the portfolio of the Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, the Black Resource Center (BRC), provides a supportive campus community space for the Black experience at UC San Diego. The BRC is committed to intra-community diversity and the development of the whole person. The BRC seeks to promote scholarship, foster leadership, and cultivate community for student success through the collaborative effort and support of faculty, staff, and the broader UC San Diego community.
The Black Resource Center seeks to create and implement programs and services, while partnering cross-campus, to support the recruitment, retention, and graduation of students. The BRC also seeks to provide a fulfilling and nurturing campus experience for all who self-identify within the African Diaspora and global Black context.
Under the general direction of the Black Resource Center (BRC) Director, the Associate Director provides leadership, guidance, and oversight in support of the mission of the BRC. The Associate Director assists in the oversight of departmental processes and procedures, and manages of the Center's developmental programs.
The Associate Director is responsible for the overall administration and management of the BRC's high impact programs, focused on improving Black students' sense of belonging and experience, while developing their academic self-concept, social agency as scholars, and general preparedness for success in graduate school and/or their chosen career. Independently develops and administers complex programs, including program curriculum development, to provide holistic services, set goals and objectives, and build intentional partnerships to ensure the ease of student access to resources and success of programmatic outcomes.
The BRC Associate Director independently develops and implements initiatives to improve outcomes related to the recruitment, development, enrichment, inclusion, retention and experience of Black students in all disciplines across the University. Oversees administration and management of the graduate student assistantship program, including recruitment, selection, training and supervision of graduate student staff. Provides training, guidance, and oversight of the BRC's student staff who are assigned to the BRC's high impact programs.
Programs and services under purview align with and advance UC San Diego's Black Academic Excellence Initiative, and are designed to facilitate the holistic development of Black identified students. Programs increase access to research, mentorship, and internships, and provide culturally grounded and affirming graduate/professional school and career preparation. The Associate Director manages and ensures the most complex and sensitive student development issues within the BRC programs are prioritized and resolved.

Knowledge and experience working with historically underrepresented ethnic minority communities and first-generation college students. Expertise with student development is required to conceptualize and implement academic support services for underrepresented students.
Advanced knowledge and understanding of the experience of Black identified students in higher education. Strong familiarity with best practices and scholarly research focused on supporting Black identified students.
Thorough knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion including an understanding of the historical and social context of diversity, equity and inclusion, and of the intersections of identities including but not limited to: race, ethnicity, gender, sexual-orientation, religious, and class background, and thorough understanding of the BRC mission.
Knowledge of academic curricula, as well as improving organizational climate and culture. Ability to develop curricula with the sound understanding of the role of performance-based assessment in student development. Proven ability to teach and provide feedback and input on design and implementation of training activities.
Demonstrated ability to design, develop, plan, and implement student-peer counseling activities for individuals and groups.
