The University of Southern Californiaâs (USCâs) Information Technology Services is seeking a talented Senior Staff Network Engineer with an exceptional commitment to service excellence to join its team. As the Network Security Engineer, you will be an integral member of the Network Engineering team, collaborating with diverse and talented team members to help solve multidimensional information technology problems, improve customer experience, and generate value for our campus stakeholders across a broad base of departments and constituencies.
The Senior Staff Network Engineer will be tasked with supporting the wired network team in the ITS Infrastructure group as well as providing the strategic and tactical design decisions to align with our departmentâs goal of 99.99% availability of network resources and services such as EVPN, DNS, DHCP, AAA, Intranet, Internet and Cloud hosted solutions. This individual will also assist in INC escalations and provide mentorship to junior members of the team.Â Â Â
The Senior Staff Network Engineer will also allow the University to continue academic instruction and research by enabling support requests from students/faculty/staff to be addressed in a timely manner. These support requests include everything from registration of computers on the wired network to the need for more extensive support for building out new and secure environments for researchers in the Data Centers and on campus.Â

The candidate for the position of Senior Staff Network Engineer must meet the following qualifications:
Bachelorâs degree in a relevant field such as computer science, computer information systems, etc., or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Eight years of experience in information technology or network engineering.
CCIE certification or equivalent experience.
Extensive experience with enterprise networking technologies, tools, and processes including routing and switching, L4-7 traffic management (e.g., load balancing), firewalls, data center fabric, campus networks, VoIP, wireless networks, network access control (NAC), virtualization, and hybrid cloud.
Proficient with network operating systems such as Arista EOS, Cisco IOS/XE/XR, Aruba AOS, and Linux.
Proficient with addressing mechanisms such as DNS, DHCP, and IPAM using both IPv4 and IPv6.
Demonstrated experience with L1 technologies including SMF, MMF, DWDM, transceivers, AOC, Twinax, fiber fanouts, etc.
Extensive experience with L2 protocols including STP, DHCP, 802.1X, LACP, MLAG, VXLAN bridging, etc.
Extensive experience with L3 protocols and techniques including MP-BGP, OSPF, VXLAN routing, VRFs, VRRP, VARP, traffic engineering, NAT, and TCP/IP.
Extensive understanding of and experience with network traffic analysis for troubleshooting (tcpdump, Wireshark, NetFlow/sFlow, iPerf, etc.).
Strong understanding of TACACS/RADIUS.
Strong experience with firewall configuration and administration.
Solid understanding of 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, RF, and WLAN fundamentals.
Ability to engage with and manage multiple vendor relationships, including processes such as evaluating vendor data products, documenting test plans, driving vendor selection, and developing deployment workbooks.
Experience with programming/scripting languages or tools used to automate networks (e.g., Python, Ansible, Git).
Ability to lead design discussions and develop solutions.
Ability to create presentation materials, generate reports, and present to leadership.
The ideal candidate for the position of Senior Staff Network Engineer meets the following qualifications:
Bachelorâs degree in a relevant field such as computer science, computer information systems, etc.
More than ten years of experience in information technology or network engineering.
Experience with Aruba ClearPass.
Experience with Fortinet.
Experience with Aruba Wireless.
In-depth familiarity with SolarWinds Orion (or other NMSs).
Experience with ethernet VPN (EVPN).
THE WORK YOU WILL DO
The Senior Staff Network Engineer leads network engineering and technical support for LAN, WAN, and network infrastructure to ensure university network systems are operating at peak efficiency with little or no downtime. This role sets the strategic vision and priorities for the design, configuration, troubleshooting, and maintenance of university networking equipment across multiple platforms. The Senior Staff Network Engineer ensures that all networking activities are aligned to industry best practices as well as ITS and university policies, processes, and procedures. The Senior Staff Network Engineer acts as a technical subject matter expert for ITS co-workers and provides training assistance and technical mentorship to the network engineering team. As a member of ITS, the Senior Staff Network Engineer demonstrates ITS values in action.
The Senior Staff Network Engineer:
Works collaboratively with key stakeholders in ITS and in other campus departments to lead the delivery of highly reliable network services. Facilitates the establishment of processes and influences the adoption of best practices. Openly shares experience and subject matter expertise with ITS co-workers as a trusted advisor through written and oral presentations. Leads network-related communications to stakeholders, technical staff, and management.
Establishes strategic project plans, schedules, and priorities that align with university objectives. Enables the development, implementation, and maintenance of policies, procedures, and associated training plans for network administration, operations, and disaster recovery. Oversees and supports the development of custom scripts to improve network efficiency and enhance network automation.
Oversees the effective engagement of customers to resolve network issues. Provides expertise in customer communications. Asks precise questions to uncover issues or pain points. Delivers expertise to campus departments to determine the suitability and capability of devices to connect to the campus network in accordance with approved network and security policies.
Strategically drives innovation and continuous improvement by leveraging the latest industry knowledge and maintaining currency with new technologies. Establishes a team culture of continuous learning by enabling the pursuit of information on new developments in network engineering through reading journals and other pertinent publications, communicating with vendors, and participating in professional organizations, meetings, conferences, seminars, and training courses.
Leads the maintenance of network availability, reliability, security, and other performance attributes based on best-in-class service levels. Oversees hands-on, proactive, and reactive maintenance and troubleshooting support. Facilitates the delivery of subject matter expertise for Tier 1 and Tier 2 service teams. Manages the campus network architecture, design, implementation, and network operations by ensuring alignment with ITS and campus security requirements. Analyzes reported metrics. Monitors a configured and maintained network monitoring system that leverages existing tools and leading-edge practices. Leads day-to-day network operations such as upgrading and applying patches to platform consoles, agents, and back-end components, performing capacity and resource planning, and assessing network risks.
Guides team members to listen and ask relevant questions to identify the root cause of network issues. Oversees the recommendation and implementation of realistic solutions. Analyzes network data and statistics to both proactively and reactively resolve network issues. Leads alongside industry experts and vendors to find and implement effective applications of technology and resolves complex vendor-specific problems, including the submission of bug reports to vendors.
