Associate or Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education
Summary: The Associate/Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education (GME) is responsible for guidance and counseling of WVSOM students regarding postgraduate internship and residency programs and assuring that match guidelines are being met. The administrator with faculty appointment shall assist in assuring that all programs meet Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and Specialty College requirements. This position supervises department staff and shall report directly to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean.
General Duties and Responsibilities for Assistant/Associate Dean
Under the supervision of the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean:
Assists with providing student advising regarding their pathway to residency. Advises and counsels students (OMS I through IV) regarding career choices, residency placement, match issues/strategies and rotation planning.
Assists affiliated hospitals with developing new postdoctoral training programs by consulting and advising.
Advises each GME program including the development and review of their curriculum, evaluation process, recruitment, and educational didactic series.
Supervise all department employees including (but not limited to) GME Program Coordinator, Director of Rural Outreach, Executive Director Southeastern AHEC, and others as assigned.
Suggest necessary documentation and ensures record keeping of postdoctoral accreditation reports and files for partner residency program and trainees.
Work with partner residents in their completion of the requirements for being granted “certificates of completion” of their graduate programs
Develop and maintain knowledge of all ACGME, Specialty College, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), and any other pertinent internship and residency regulations.
Maintain and oversee WVSOM Match data information.
Serves as the Chief Academic Officer for the Mountain State OPTI (educational consortium), works collaboratively with CEOs of MSOPTI hospital partner, Chairs multiple committees, serves as WVSOM’s representative to hospitals and their postgraduate programs and ensures MSOPTI training is of the highest quality.
Responsible for originating and retaining all affiliation and aggregation agreements between WVSOM and partner institutions.
Prepare and oversee departmental budgets.
Develop and initiate in-service training and leadership training programs.
Participate as an active team member with WVSOM Associate and Assistant Deans and Campus Directors for the purpose of developing and implementing the statewide campus system including GME related topics for OMS III and IV.
Assist with the development and implementation of OSCEs for partner internship and residency programs.
Provides oversight of Southeastern AHEC programs and services provided by WVSOM.
Recommends prospective adjunct clinical faculty to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean.
Teach and facilitate as requested by the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Position: This is a full-time, non-classified administrative position with a faculty appointment with full state benefits. Title, salary, and faculty rank shall be based on the final candidate’s qualifications. The position is exempt from FLSA provisions regarding overtime. Not all activities of this position occur within the confines of an 8:00-4:30 schedule and will require regular evening and weekend scheduling. Some travel including overnight travel is required. This position has been designated as essential. This means that when WVSOM is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover and continue operations at WVSOM.

Earned Degree as Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) or Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from an accredited college. Candidate must be board certified.
Eligible for a current license to practice medicine in the State of West Virginia.
For Associate Level – requires a minimum of five (5) years of experience in academic administration and experience in graduate medical education at the level of Assistant Dean, Associate Dean, Residency Program Director, and/or Director of Medical Education.
For Assistant Level – requires two (2) years of experience as residency program director or a minimum of two (2) years as a core faculty member within a residency program.
The candidate should have a working knowledge of affiliation and aggregation agreements, ACGME and specialty college residency requirements.
The candidate must have experience with counseling students in residency placement.
The successful candidate will have strong leadership skills with experience with budgets, effective management, and a background in health policy. Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
