Job Description Senior Associate Dean – Academic and Student Affairs
The primary responsibility of the Senior Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs is to provide strategic leadership and coordination of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine programs within the College of Veterinary Medicine. The Senior Associate Dean also provides leadership surrounding accreditation to enhance the college's capabilities in quality and continuous improvement. The Senior Associate Dean also serves as an advisor to the Dean on academic matters including broader educational initiatives, a focus on institutional effectiveness, program planning, and evaluation. Specific responsibilities will include the following:
Academic Leadership: Provide leadership and strategic direction for the delivery and outcomes assessments of the CVM’s professional curriculum Provide oversight for the DVM curriculum, including the work of the Associate Dean for Education and Assistant Dean for Curriculum Provide leadership in the development of CVM educational policies Provide oversight of strategic initiatives for education including Community Medicine and Competency-based Veterinary Education Responsible for conducting and supporting outcomes assessment in collaboration with faculty, administrators, and professional staff to support continuous improvement of the teaching and learning environment Provides oversight of AVMA Council on Education accreditation processes and reporting Represent the CVM professional educational mission on U of M and national committees including:
Health Sciences Associate Deans
Professional Education Council
Academic Affairs Committee of the American Association of Colleges of Veterinary Medicine
Build and maintain relationships with external partners that support our educational mission.
Office of Academic and Student Affairs Leadership: Provide leadership and supervision for the Office of Academic and Student Affairs to support recruitment, admissions, advising, registration, scheduling, student wellbeing, events, mentorship, career planning, financial aid, and student debt management Serve as liaison between the Office of Academic and Student Affairs and Office of Graduate Programs to be inclusive of graduate students in program development and delivery where appropriate Provide oversight for the Office of Academic and Student Affairs budget Provide oversight for the CVM eLearning strategies, including CVM Office of Online Learning (COOL) Provide leadership of student academic support and advising, including support of students with documented disabilities
Admissions Leadership: Provide leadership of diversity, equity and inclusion efforts related to current students and the recruitment of prospective students Develop innovative partnerships for recruitment of under-served career paths and populations
The Senior Associate Dean or their designee serve on the Committee on Curriculum and Educational Policy, Admissions Committee, Student Promotions Committee and other ad hoc committees as needed. The Senior Associate Dean is a member of the CVM Administrative Council and reports directly to the Dean on all matters related to academic and student affairs. The Senior Associate Dean is expected to participate in classroom instruction and clinical or laboratory teaching consistent with their area of expertise.

Required Qualifications: Advanced degree in a field closely related to the position. (e.g., DVM/VMD, EdD, PhD, etc.) Applicants should have sufficient experience and accomplishments for appointment at the rank of associate professor or professor in either a contract or a tenure-track position Experienced administrator with background to include leadership, such as oversight of academic and student affairs or like unit at an institution of higher education Strong team leadership, organizational, and communication skills Evidence of being highly collaborative and able to assist with conflict resolution Demonstrated commitment to educating and empowering diverse students, and advancing the college’s commitment to inclusion and diversity.
Preferred Qualifications: Record of publication and/or scholarship in their field of expertise Enthusiasm for and evidence of involvement with leading competency based education initiatives Proven record of student advocacy and support of student wellness.
