Patient Billing/Services Representative III - Medical Oncology

This position serves as the lead to Patient Billing/Services Representatives; plans, organizes, gives direction, and assists in aspects of the front desk/scheduling team; coordinates office functions and performs specialized/technical duties with minimal supervision; serves as a liaison between consumers (staff, patients, healthcare professionals and general public) and advocates the patientsâ™ needs.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Investigates insurance identified by scheduling to ensure it is contracted insurance with Washington University along with contacting insurance companies to verify coverage and Oncology benefits for services scheduled.
Communication with Billing/financial counselor when non-contracted insurance is identified.
Acts as a liaison between scheduling staff and the department to resolve patient/insurance issues prior to appointment.
Monitors EPIC work queues, appointment desk, DAR, in-basket.Â Completes scheduling requests, forwards messages as appropriate and takes all steps to facilitate the patientâ™s plan of care and patient satisfaction.
Monitors Siteman Treatment Center schedules and utilize available systems and reports effectively to ensure accurate insurance coverage prior to scheduled services.
Proactively reports to the management team regarding scheduling issues or opportunities.
Serves as backup to Oncology precertification staff as instructed by Supervisor.
Graduate of an accredited medical assistant program.
Ability to work independently, organize and prioritize work in a fast paced medical office setting.
Working knowledge of anatomy/physiology and fundamentals of medical terminology.
Experience working with electronic medical records
Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
Experience interacting with managed care plans, insurance companies and third party payers.
Ability to work with internal and external customers including physicians, nurses, patients and families.
Thorough understanding of both Washington University Insurance database and insurance terminology.
Working knowledge of general office equipment and computers.
Organization and communication skills that require discretion with confidential information.
Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple tasks, have knowledge of medical terminology, handle busy phones, and capable of working in a fast-paced environment.
Possesses excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills; must have excellent knowledge of IDX scheduling system, including templates.
Ability to handle stressful situations and have excellent decision-making skills.
High school diploma or equivalent high school certification.
Four to five years of experience in a medical office environment, or related field.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Extensive telephone experience with demonstrated exceptional phone etiquette.
Experienced in a managed care setting.
Experience using the Epic system.
Familiar with WUSM services and programs.
Extensive knowledge with data entry/computer experience with an automated scheduling system.
Basic Life Support certification (Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements).
$19.19 - $28.78 / HourlyThe salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
