The Communications Program Manager independently oversees a comprehensive communications program for California Sea Grant with moderately complex communications requirements. The communications program usually includes written, visual, digital and electronic communications. Collaborates with management to develop and execute organizational communication and market branding strategy. Designs and implements information campaigns. The Communications Program Manager will serve as the primary lead for CASG's Communications and will provide work direction to the small communication's team.
The position will work with the CASG Director and other members of the Management Team (Extension Program Director and Assistant Director) to develop and employ communication tools and approaches that reflect program needs and priorities, and that will advance the role of science in effective stewardship and management of the coastal ocean. To accomplish its mission the CASG Communications team produces, publishes and disseminates a range of products that include an annual Program Directory, newsletters, frequent project summaries & profiles, news releases and maintains the CASG website. Responsible for the program's reporting requirements, including overseeing the gathering and entering of annual data about CASG program activities into PIER, the National Sea Grant reporting database.
Serves as part of the CASG Management Team, and will be responsible for coordinating all formal communications activities of the CASG program, providing communications support to Sea Grant Management and the Extension Program. The position will be responsible for day-to-day administration and implementation of all public relations and communications activities of the Sea Grant program. Serves as the primary science writer and editor for CASG, provides oversight of the writing, posting, publishing and distributing newsletters, project summaries and profiles, and press releases describing, highlighting and promoting the various activities of CASG's extension specialists and funded researchers.
Master's degree plus at least two (2) years of on-the-job experience in science-related communications and marketing, and/or Bachelor's degree plus at least five (5) years of on-the-job experience in science-related communications and marketing and/or equivalent experience/ training.
Solid skills to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans.
Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.
Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills. Highly polished writing and editing skills, strong presentation and verbal communication skills - generated through critical attention to detail. Thorough skills to write clear, lively, engaging and compelling copy in a variety of styles appropriate to target audiences, while maintaining brand.
Knowledge of the organization, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices, infrastructure, and a strong knowledge of current affairs, and issues in higher education and/ or health sciences. In all instances, the acumen of the Communication's Program Manager will include characteristics of professionalism in conversation, attitude, behavior, and attentiveness to people.
Knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to the target and/or broad general audiences.
Knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively direct technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications.
