Napa Valley College is seeking an individual with demonstrated counseling and instructional skills to join an outstanding team of staff, faculty and instructional administrators to provide high quality programs and services to our district, our community, and most importantly, our students, as part of the Student Support Services TRIO Program.
Student Support Services (SSS) TRIO is a federally funded grant program dedicated to helping 185 Napa Valley College students each year. The program has been at Napa Valley College since 1997 and has since then served over 2,600 students. The grant serves low-income, first-generation students, and individuals with disabilities according to ratios and guidelines set by the federal government. The program provides opportunities for academic development, assists students with basic college requirements, and serves to motivate students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education. The goal of SSS TRIO is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants, facilitate their transfer from two-year to four-year colleges and foster an institutional climate supportive of their successes.
This is a full-time, temporary, grant-funded faculty position through August 31, 2025, with the possibility of an extension. The assignment is based on a 175-day faculty work year, plus up to 23 additional days of counseling services annually to support activities related to the division and the Student Support Services (SSS) TRIO grant, as approved by the Associate Dean, Talent Search and Student Support Services Programs per academic year.
Initial salary range placement for the 175-day faculty year is $59,494 - $69,168 annually, with future steps up to $81,774 through August 2025, plus compensation for up to 23 additional days of counseling services. Initial annual compensation for 23 additional days is $7,819-9,090, with future increases up to $10,747 through 2025. Salary and extra days will be prorated based on start date. If grant is extended past 2025, future step increases are possible up to $97,780 annually and 23 extra day compensation up to $12,851 annually. Placement on the salary schedule is commensurate with education and experience. Reassigned time will be provided to allow for coordination. The college offers a fringe benefit package, including medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, employee assistance program, and CalSTRS membership.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under direction of the Associate Dean, Talent Search and Student Support Services Programs, the Counselor/Coordinator, SSS TRIO will:
Provide personal, academic and career counseling to SSS TRIO students;
Develop educational plans for SSS TRIO students leading to a degree and/or certificate, and transfer to a 4-year institution;
Develop and teach relevant Counseling Courses, as mandated per grant;
Develop, update, and maintain all related materials used to advise SSS TRIO students on academic majors, degrees, and transfer requirements;
Assist with the development/revision of Counseling curriculum;
Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with program participants, staff, faculty and various community agencies;
Participate in appropriate counseling and faculty/staff meetings and college-wide student retention efforts;
Meet students by appointment or on a drop-in basis, including group appointments;
Facilitate group workshops and be involved in online counseling, including assisting students in determining and achieving their academic, career, and personal goals;
Under the direction of the Associate Dean, Talent Search and Student Support Services Programs, coordinate the day-to-day operations and assist in the monitor of the Student Support Services (SSS) TRIO Program in compliance with grant specifications and federal regulations;
Plan, coordinate, and develop the following program activities including but not limited to: recruitment, intake, eligibility determination, advising and counseling, instructional support, and academic field trip activities of the SSS TRIO Program;
Coordinate with other student service and academic programs to advance the goals and objectives of the SSS TRIO program;
Represents Napa Valley College and the SSS TRIO Program at local, regional, and statewide meetings;
Keeps a detailed record of all tasks in progress and completed;
Provides information for monthly newsletters, correspondence, reports, and other documents to disseminate program information;
Monitor and measure student outcome data for reporting and planning purposes;
Coordinate program activities and information with college departments;
Documents contacts with students and maintains student records in compliance with program regulations;
Maintain, document, and monitor student case load;
Complete appropriate paperwork with students (i.e. challenges, petitions, appeals);
Reviews early alert and mid-semester progress reports and provides follow- up services to students;
Provide information about financial and economic literacy and assist students with applying for Financial Aid (FAFSA) and scholarships;
Assist students with applying to 4-year institutions for transfer including applying for financial aid; and
Provide follow-up services, information, and referrals to ensure student retention.
Assignment may include a combination of day, evening, weekend, off-campus classes, and online or other technology-supported instruction. All faculty are required to adhere to contractual obligations, meet assigned classes, maintain regular office hours, assist and advise students, participate in division activities and appropriate college committees as assigned, including regular faculty meetings of the department, division and College.
Earned Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling OR

All degrees must be from an accredited institution.
A minimum of two-years demonstrated college-level counseling, teaching, and/or coordinating a Student Support Services TRIO program or similar educational program;
Demonstrated experience designing, coordinating or implementing a SSS program or similar special project; and
Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic background of community college students.
Desirable Professional Competencies
Two years of full-time or two years part-time counseling and/or teaching experience at the community college level;
Demonstrated experience in teaching lower-division counseling;
Experience coordinating a Student Support Services TRIO program or similar educational program;
Demonstrated experience in implementing counseling techniques to effectively address the learning needs of students from a variety of cultural, educational and socioeconomic backgrounds;
Demonstrated experience in developing curriculum and assessing student learning outcomes;
Ability to provide personal, academic, career, financial aid and transfer advising;
Excellent human relations skills, including the ability to establish and maintain good rapport with program participants and college staff and faculty;
Familiarity with instructional technology and student academic services;
Bilingual in English/Spanish.
