UC San Diego Radiation Medicine & Applied Sciences (RMAS) is a leading global research center related to advanced radiation technologies. The RMAS is home to internationally recognized faculty from across oncology and related fields. Our principal Investigators (PIs) at RMAS are leading groundbreaking research in basic science, imaging, retrospective outcomes research using data science techniques, and clinical trials testing new treatments for people affected by cancer. At RMAS, we are developing and translating innovative precision cancer treatments in partnerships with Moores Cancer Center, UC San Diego Health, UC San Diego School of Medicine, and the California Proton Therapy Center. Our goal is to accelerate these promising treatments from the laboratory bench to the patients' bedsides, and expand patients' access to exceptional therapies. Work from our lab has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Cancer, Journal of the National Cancer Institute and other high-tier journals. We place a focus on disparities research in cancer patients, using the resources we have to better understand the mechanisms underlying racial disparities in medicine and what can be done to solve them. The ideal candidate has an interest in healthcare and health services research, using data science tools to make a significant impact on improving the healthcare and outcomes of cancer patients around the globe.
Under the direction of clinical faculty and Principal Investigators, the incumbent will independently gather, analyze, prepare, and input patient related outcomes associated with clinical research into the health services research database for their associated research group within the Department of Radiation Medicine and Applied Sciences (RMAS). This includes databases such as VA Informatics and Computing Infrastructure (VINCI) which contains records of all Veterans Affairs patients, local and national registry databases like the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database and other large healthcare related data sources. The incumbent should be proficient in navigating databases and developing workflows for creating datasets suitable for statistical analysis using SQL and SAS. Additionally, we are interested in developing tools to extract structured patient information from free-text chart entries, so skills in implementing or developing Natural Language Processing algorithms are valued.
Statistically, the Research Data Analyst 3 will apply software-based analytical programs to compute and present statistical results to department leadership, regulatory over site committees, and publication committees. They will use skills as a seasoned, experienced research professional with a full understanding of in-depth statistical analyses and / or research software programming techniques including R, SAS, and SQL. They must demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions to various research questions. Common statistical techniques performed will include but are not limited to survival analysis, regression modelling, and chi squared tests. The incumbent should have a big picture understanding of how different tests translate to real world findings and how to implement and explain a research plan to a wide audience. Statistics will preferably be performed in SAS or R, with accompanying graphing experience required.
The Research Data Analyst 3 will communicate data findings by writing and editing scientific papers. In consultation with the PI, they will review data and contribute content for the preparation scientific papers. Additional responsibilities may include: preparing for and participating in weekly team meetings with study investigators and staff, attending education sessions, assisting with subject data collection and entry, assisting with data analyses, and contributing to publications. A basic understanding of biology and the interest to learn about general cancer treatment and healthcare concepts as it pertains to specific projects.
