Dept Marketing Statement The Ocean Sciences Department has an international reputation in research, graduate and postdoctoral education. UCSC's location on the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and the impressive growth of marine and ocean science initiatives at UCSC and surrounding institutions make this an outstanding setting of our department. The growing department consists of over 126 individuals, including 13 faculty, adjunct and affiliate professors, lecturers, and many postdocs, researchers and other administrative and technical support staff. The department has approximately 50 graduate students working towards Ph.D. and Masters degrees. In collaboration with the Earth and Planetary Sciences department Ocean Sciences supports an undergraduate major in Environmental Science. The Department is closely aligned with the research and faculty in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Earth and Planetary Sciences, and Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology as well as outside agencies NOAA, NMFS, MBARI, USGS, NPS, The Nature Conservancy and others.
Under the direction of the Ocean Sciences Department Manager, this initial 6-month position as Department Assistant will provide a wide range of administrative support, including general administrative duties, academic personnel, seminar and event coordination, faculty and course support, web management, travel & entertainment coordination, and special reimbursement, oversight of supplies and general equipment, and special projects. These duties require staying up to date with ever-changing campus policies, procedures and systems related to all aspects of working at UCSC.
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule Salary Information: Salary Range: $24.64 - $25.78/hour. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

Job Duties 60% - Administrative Support
Provide general clerical and administrative support for Department Manager and work collaboratively with the Graduate Advisor and OS committees. Provide support for instructional needs of Ocean Sciences faculty and graduate students. Assist with course preparation and scheduling.
40% - Special Projects
There are a number of projects that will be the focus during this 6 month hire, including but not limited to website content creation and overseeing transition to new format, updating - organization and creation of departmental handbooks, creation of donor outreach & fundraising, alumni support & outreach, enhancing regional collaborations, and diversity.
Demonstrated administrative and clerical experience in an office environment and as part of a team of professional staff members.
Demonstrated experience using a computer and associated applications (word processing, spreadsheet, database, text editing, electronic mail systems, web), social media, internet navigation, creating online surveys, working knowledge of Macintosh platform, and ability to learn new systems and software
Demonstrated work experience requiring excellent communication (written and verbal) with the ability to understand written and oral instructions.
Excellent customer service skills.
Demonstrated experience utilizing interpersonal skills that allow for effective working relationships with a diverse population including faculty, staff, students, and the general public.
Ability to anticipate deadlines and prepare work in a timely manner.
Ability to pay close attention to detail and work with a high degree of accuracy.
Demonstrated problem solving skills and experience working on multiple tasks and/or projects simultaneously with minimal supervision, ability to respond promptly to changing priorities and to independently coordinate and complete a number of projects with competing deadlines and frequent interruptions.
Professional demeanor and ability to handle confidential matters and sensitive issues with tact, discretion, and personal integrity.
Working knowledge of University of California online systems.
