POSITION: Full-Time Education and Career Advisor (Academic Counselor); Essex County Sheriff's Department, Middleton House of Corrections; 37.5 hours per week; MCCC/MTA classification system; Grant Funded position; Pay grade 5.
Summary: The Education and Career Advisor will report to the Director of Education, Corrections Program and will advise and support inmates and probationers on education and career goals at the Middleton House of Corrections.
This position is located with the secure environment of the Essex County Correctional Facility located in Middleton, Massachusetts and adherence to all security protocols is required. A job offer is contingent upon the satisfactory completion of a multi phased background check. This position is considered an essential / emergency position by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the event of a Governor's decree of a state of emergency
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Education and Career Advisor advises and supports students to obtain HiSET or GED certification, develop short and long-term education and career goals, postsecondary and work readiness skills. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Maintain confidential notes/records for all students
Intake and assess new students
Enter intake data, student goals and progress into an EXCEL spreadsheet
Collaborate with SEIS service providers
Administer the HiSet test to eligible students
Monitor and report student attendance
Provide individual education and career planning and advising for post-secondary education/ training and career opportunities
Help students to identify education and career goals; develop an Education and Career Plan
Lead weekly Job Readiness and Life Skills class;
Refer students to relevant community services e.g. MassHire Career Center, housing, education, health and substance abuse programs
Monitor student's progress through check-ins and regularly scheduled meetings
Collaborate with teacher(s) to ensure that student goals inform instruction
Refer students to academic supports to enhance progress and address barriers
Collaborate with NECC Advising and Academic Departments
Follow up with students regarding educational progress and goal achievement
Document and maintain all advising in a confidential record
Participate in required staff meetings, professional development and conferences
Participate in program planning and development activities
Demonstrate teamwork abilities and capacity to work across departments and/or disciplines
Submit time sheets electronically on a weekly basis; keep accurate work log
Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology or closely related field; with three (3) years' experience and/or training involving college admissions, academic advisement, career development, or program/project management; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
Strong computer skills - Word, Excel, email, etc.
Demonstrated writing and interpersonal communication skills
Ability to work independently and as part of an educational team
Experience working with adult learners and corrections populations
Knowledge of community resources including substance abuse programs
Ability to adapt to challenging environment
Bilingual fluency - English/Spanish.
Experience working with and supporting a culturally diverse population
SALARY: Anticipated salary range is $59,244.00 to $66,252.00 annually with complete fringe benefit package. Actual salary calculated in compliance with MCCC/MTA classification system; Pay grade 5. Transcripts will be required at the time of hire.
