Department/Area: The Institute for Quantitative Social Science (IQSS)
The IQSS Senior Research Scientist for Data Science and Product Research is a key advisor on the research agenda and strategic direction for IQSS' research software product and services. The person in this position contributes to the intellectual pursuits of Professor Gary King's and IQSS's research programs and is responsible for helping define products by maintaining a comprehensive understanding of open science, data science, and corresponding technical advancements, market, user needs, and competitive dynamics as well as participating as a key contributor to the slate of federal and foundation-funded research that underpins IQSS' work.
In particular, the responsibilities of this position include the following activities:
Provides academic direction, technical architecture guidance and management oversight, as either PI or co-PI, on complex data intensive initiatives. Seeks external research support on a continuing basis.
Manages the IQSS Data Science and Product Research Team including Data Curation, Data Science Services, and Research and Development, which includes the following:
staff research scientists, including data research scientists
data curation, management and archival specialists and
Participates in scholarly, collaborative, and outreach activities offered by IQSS, including establishing and managing collaborations.
Participates in international and national efforts to develop and improve scholarly norms and policies relevant to IQSS' projects through which IQSS multiplies its efforts and outcomes.
PhD in Social Science, Computer Science, Data Science or related field
A minimum of 10 years of postdoctoral experience
Technical knowledge of file systems architecture, storage and management of data.
Strong working knowledge of international, federal, and state data privacy and management regulations.
Expert in research data management, the data management life cycle, data citation and data standards.
Ability to comprehend and translate technical information and issues and apply to business solutions.
History of cultivating a collaborative strategy, with the ability to establish and maintain strong relationships, to influence others, and move toward a common vision or goal.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work with people of all levels of technical ability.
