Under supervision, this position will support research related to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease" and related neurodegenerative disorders. This position will oversee a neuropathological tissue repository and require tissue management including gross dissection, tissue freezing, fixation, paraffin embedding, microtome, crystat cutting, routine neuropathological staining, and molecular pathology (IF, IHC, ISH on human brain and spinal cord). In addition, the position requires overall lab management including supply inventory and equipment maintenance. There is need for and opportunity to support mouse experiments and to support cell culture, molecular biology of gene expression, and biochemistry. Responsibilities may include production and maintenance of cell lines, perform various molecular biology techniques (PCR, RNA profiling and amplification, expression profiling). ALS Researcher will examine, photograph, and analyze resultant material on light, fluorescent, and confocal microscopes. Importance is given to ability to collaborate and work with others in the lab, share expertise, teach others, and stay abreast with current publications and research findings, and learn new techniques through mentoring and support. Additional duties include participate in planning and sequencing of work, meticulous recordkeeping, archiving of biological specimens, data analysis and general lab duties including but not limited to, lab cleanliness, ordering supplies and equipment, and lab safety.
This job is posted as 60%-variable to ensure the employee will have benefits but also have flexibility of work schedule-–funding is available for full time (100%) work.
Knowledge and expertise in molecular neuropathology.
Working knowledge of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease, ALS pathology, neuroanatomy of motor system, spinal cord anatomy and histology, molecular biology or related field esp. RNA biology and gene expression.
Experience to independently oversee neuropathology tissues including fixation, embedding, sectioning and performing routine histology, including prepare staining solutions and buffers, IHC, IF, and microscopy.
Experience with cell cultures to maintain and create cell lines and all technical aspects needed for this, such as media prep, supply materials standard media supplies, and supply requisition.
Experience to independently perform tissue acquisition at autopsies including tissue processing for downstream applications, de-identifying and archiving acquired tissues and materials and proper handling of cadaver including identification and notification of authorities and meticulous tracking while under research authority.
Demonstrated ability and willing to learn new techniques as need arises by self-study, seeking mentors, taking precautions, comparing information and experiences to improve and refine these for optimal performance.
Experience to perform routine experiments with attention to detail, analyze results, and provide accurate documentation, and to write papers for publication.
Strong verbal, written, and electronic communication skills that facilitate professional, effective, and courteous interaction both within the lab group and with diverse collaborators.
Outstanding interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy and flexibility with the ability to work in a team framework in conjunction with principles of community with staff, faculty and students. Promote effective and respective interactions essential to foster and enliven research and academics.
