The University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford (UICOMR) seeks an experienced health care leader to serve as Associate Dean for Rural Health Professions and to direct its National Center for Rural Health Professions (NCRHP). The Associate Dean will be a tenured faculty member of the Department of Family and Community Medicine. The NCRHP at the UICOMR strives to meet the health care needs of rural residents and their communities throughout Illinois, the nation, and the world.
The University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford is a national leader in rural medical education. Founded in 1971 to address the health care needs of people throughout Illinois, the UICOMR has trained over 1,900 physicians. The regional campus in Rockford is part of the University of Illinois College of Medicine, one of the largest medical schools in the United States. The Associate Dean provides leadership for operations, strategic planning, research, curriculum, and oversight for several key programs: Rural Health Professions academic programs, Student Pipeline program and Global Health Partnership. The Associate Dean also ensures that all aspects of the Rural Medical Education program (RMED) are of the highest caliber. The RMED program is a selective longitudinal medical school experience designed to promote rural practice. In 1993, UICOMR developed the Rural Medical Education (RMED) program and presently nearly 50% of each entering medical school class is comprised of RMED students.
The NCRHP is one of three centers in North America that collaborates with the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization to advance medical education using social accountability principles, focusing on primary care services for underserved communities and rural populations. The NCRHP serves as the Program Office for HRSA-funded Area Health Education Centers Network Program for the state and has established relationships with 30 rural health systems across the state of Illinois and offers more than 50 rural clinical teaching sites. Having expanded its rural focus to include additional health professions programs (pharmacy and nursing), the NCRHP has plans to further expand its programs to include dentistry, social work, physical and occupational therapy, nutrition, and public health. The Associate Dean is responsible for operations, fiscal management, faculty/staff recruitment and retention, and the provision of appropriate resources to support and advance the center’s education and research initiatives.
Rockford is a progressive, mid-sized metropolitan area in northern Illinois, west of Chicago. The city has minor league baseball and hockey, numerous golf courses, award-winning park system, three botanical gardens, an art museum, theaters, a revitalizing downtown, and a river walk. Public and several private school systems are available.

Minimum qualifications include MD/DO/PhD in a health systems field. Must have extensive administrative experience. Strong preference for candidates with at least 5 years- experience in research, clinical or academic leadership role. Experience with rural health program initiatives is required. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
