The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences' Student Academic Services at Iowa State University is currently seeking qualified candidates for an Academic Adviser I /II to advise a diverse group of students.
Academic advisors in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences report to LAS Student Academic Services and advise students in assigned departments.Â It is possible that these departments may change over time depending on student enrollment.
Responsibilities include providing professional academic advising services to current or potential students and their families related to programs of study, career exploration, class registration, academic standing, campus engagement, and student success; contributing to program leadership by identifying unique college and departmental partnerships that support pre-professional student retention; engaging in program support by facilitating orientation course, selecting and training peer mentors, and executing community building and exploration focused events and acting as an advocate and referral agent by connecting students with campus resources and high impact practices.Â
A successful candidate will bring a student-centered, equity lens to advising and have a preference for collaboration.Â The candidate will have experience advising or counseling diverse populations in one-on-one and group settings.Â The duties of this position require excellent communication, organizational, leadership, and time management skills.
Example of Duties â¢ Advises students concerning degree planning, academic support services, academic policy issues, graduation requirements, degree certification, degree auditing, etc. â¢ Assists students in making personal education decisions and meeting graduation requirements including course selections. â¢ Refers students to appropriate resources such as counseling, academic success, financial aid, etc. â¢ Interprets academic policies and procedures to support student success. â¢ Teaches orientation courses. â¢ Presents at orientation or other events. â¢ Participates in recruitment activities. â¢ Advises learning communities. â¢ Advises student organizations. â¢ May supervise students.
Level Guidelines â¢ Individual contributor position with developing professional and/or technical skills working under immediate to general supervision â¢ Grasps professional-level knowledge and concepts of field while working in a progressive learning mode â¢ Works on problems and issues of somewhat limited scope â¢ Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data for which answers are available or can be obtained â¢ Responds to inquiries and issues, escalating to manager or higher level workers as appropriate â¢ May lead projects of limited scope and complexity â¢ May provide guidance to students
This position will be hired as an Academic Advisor I or II depending on candidate's experience
Minimum qualifications for Academic Advisor I
Pay Grade: PS805
Minimum qualifications for Academic Advisor II
Bachelorâs degree and 2 years of related experience
Pay Grade: PS806
In addition to the duties above, the Academic Advisor II will have additional assigned duties.
