Ojai Valley School is a pre-kindergarten to grade 12 boarding and day school located on two campuses in Ojai, California. The Lower Campus serves students in grades PK-8 and the Upper Campus serves students in grades 9-12.
Summary of Position
The Middle School Language Arts Teacher, under the supervision of the Head of School, Lower Campus, is responsible for maintaining, creating and implementing curriculum for 7th and 8th grades as well as overseeing the scope and sequence of K-8th, such that it builds progressively from instruction received in the earlier grades and works towards the rigors anticipated in high school.
Ours is a literature-based and project-based curriculum, and, where possible, content overlaps with social studies either topically or thematically. Our primary goals are to strengthen students’ listening and speaking skills, develop confident and critical readers and thinkers, nurture creative and analytical writing, and foster a life-long appreciation of language. Coursework focuses on careful analysis of fiction and non-fiction, public speaking and performance, writing for different audiences, reading in different genres, and engaging interdisciplinary projects.
Along with enthusiasm for working with middle school students and the ability to communicate effectively and inspire them, the ideal candidate will have background in project-based learning and will be familiar with the progressive methodologies that teach to the whole child. Love of language, the energy of this age group, and the challenging work of bringing them to mastery in the written arts, are a definite plus. Readiness to provide academic support outside of class time, develop differentiated instruction and assessment, and be available as an advisor and mentor is essential. Ancillary duties such as co-chairing the Literacy Committee, running the school spelling bee, arranging field trips, and guiding students in public presentations should also be anticipated.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Instructs students according to the requirements outlined in the job description for teachers in the Faculty Training Manual.
Develops a program consistent with the school philosophy, and coordinates with elementary and high school divisions.
Organizes the methodology of respective courses to satisfy individual needs and preparation for the following grade level.
Maintains a warm and positive environment in the classroom, while establishing and managing classroom rules and regulations.
Leads children, by example and otherwise, adhering to the guidelines of the school Course of Study and Faculty Training Manual.
Cares for and protects the safety of the students and is versed in emergency and disaster procedures.
Provides leadership with emergency and disaster procedures; is thoroughly advised and clear about role during emergency and disaster procedures.
Prepares course objectives and outlines for the Course of Study following curriculum guidelines, satisfying state and local requirements.
Lectures, demonstrates, and uses audiovisual teaching aids to present subject matter to class.
Prepares, administers, and corrects tests and records results.
Assigns lessons, corrects papers, and hears oral presentations.
Takes roll at 8:00 a.m. and promptly reports to Front Office.
Monitors silent reading.
Accompanies classes to special events and school functions.
Communicates with parents, dorm parents, and administration on a regular basis.
Displays students’ work around the school and in publications.
Orients new students.
Teaches rules of conduct.
Prepares a presentation for an All-school assembly.
Maintains order and discipline in the classroom.
Counsels students and reviews grades on a continual basis.
Coordinates and contributes to class field trips.
Contributes to parent newsletters and/or publications.
Provides leadership with emergency and disaster procedures.
Is a member of a weekend team.
Gives instructions to children regarding desirable health and personal habits.
Provides after-school tutoring 2-3 days a week for students in need.
Additional instructional/supervisory responsibilities as directed by Head of School.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in English from a four-year college or university; prior teaching experience required. Credential and experience with curriculum planning is preferred.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to calculate grades, and possesses basic skills to work with budgets.
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Current CPR and First Aid preferred.
California Driver's License preferred.
