We currently have a job opening for a Middle School Learning Specialist and Director of Learning Services
East Bay School for Boys—an independent middle school for boys in Berkeley, CA—is looking for a full-time Learning Specialist to lead the Learning Services Department for the 2021-2022 school year. This position will report to the Head of School.
Duties specific to this position include:
Managing Learning Services staff support assignments.
1:1 academic coaching, small group instruction, and push-in support in general education classrooms.
Coordinating student testing by outside evaluators; communicating and managing this process for other staff.
Administering informal evaluations to get preliminary results when staff/families raise concerns about a potential learning challenge.
Writing and maintaining individualized learning plans (ILPs) and team meeting notes, and managing accommodations and supports for each student on the case load.
Organizing and leading team meetings, including parents, advisors, and other school faculty.
Ensuring that teachers follow ILP recommendations, including instructional strategies and curriculum modifications.
Tracking student progress, including grades, homework completion, extensions, and long-term projects; supporting students in organizing and prioritizing their work, self-advocating, and communicating with teachers.
Supporting teachers by reviewing curriculum and providing modified work and creative alternatives to support their classes and projects.
Planning and leading staff professional development.
Defining school-wide initiatives related to students’ development and learning needs.
Meeting with other middle school learning specialists to determine best practices.
In addition, we ask all EBSB staff to do the following:
Effectively communicate with a diverse parent body.
Participate in team and staff meetings, attend school functions, supervise student breaks, etc.
Participate on the Admissions Committee and other committees, as needed and appropriate.
Required qualifications specific to this position include:
A Bachelor of Arts or Science degree and/or professional coursework or certification indicating training applicable to the responsibilities of the position.
Understanding of the spectrum of learning disabilities and how they may affect student learning.
Comfort in communicating with parents/guardians and facilitating team meetings with families and other stakeholders to advocate for student growth and learning needs.
Proven experience designing and implementing learning supports.
In addition to the above, the following qualifications are highly desirable:
A certificate in Educational Therapy or relevant coursework or certification indicating advanced knowledge in areas related to the responsibilities of the position.
Experience as a learning specialist at a middle or high school.
