Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano (BTSJC) is an education program hosted at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School. BTSJC’s mission is to support highly motivated students from the local and surrounding San Juan Capistrano communities whose backgrounds are underrepresented in higher education by providing tuition-free academic programming and guidance from middle school through college graduation.
Nationally, only 1 out of every 10 first-generation students from low-income backgrounds graduate college after six years. BTSJC is determined to reverse this trend and increase college graduates from underrepresented backgrounds. In doing so, the long-term vision is to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty and transform both lives and communities.
In the 2020-21 school year, the program served 336 students from 7th grade through college. 94% are the first in their families to attend college, 98% identify as students of color, and 88% are from low-income backgrounds. The program is an affiliate of the Breakthrough Collaborative, one of twenty-four sites around the country serving over 10,000 students.
Breakthrough SJC is seeking an Executive Director.
The Executive Director leads a three-person office, directs the BTSJC program, manages the operational needs of the program, and acts as the lead liaison with the St. Margaret’s and external communities.
