Organizational Unit Overview Athletic Student Development provides academic advising and support services to the university’s student-athlete population. The athletics program is comprised of 18 varsity sports, seven men’s and eleven women’s. The student development program is committed to supporting the academic progress of student-athletes and the achievement of their educational objectives.
Job Duties The director’s primary role is to administer and direct the Office of Student Development. Duties include but are not limited to:
Supervises the academic services provided to the student-athlete population including advising, course registration, academic progress checks, academic preparedness assessments, tutorial services, study halls, and study skills development programing.
Directly and indirectly supervises the student development staff composed of academic coordinators, learning specialists, graduate assistants, and tutorial/mentor student staff.
Creates and implements innovative programming that supports and enhances the student-athlete academic experience and that aligns with the educational mission of the University.
Manages the freshman transition program to support each freshman student-athlete’s transition from high school to college.
Develops policies and procedures to ensure effective operations of the office and of individual programs.
Collects and compiles data on the academic progress and success of the student-athletes.
Conducts evaluations of program effectiveness and makes necessary improvements to better meet program goals.
Serves as the primary liaison with the registrar’s office to assist with matters related to student-athlete academic status, eligibility, and certification.
Responsible for NCAA Graduation Success Rate data collection and entry.
Prepares and submits various NCAA, American Athletic Conference, UNC System, and University reports.
Oversees the office’s monitoring of progress toward degree rules to ensure NCAA compliance.
Collaborates with University advising centers to augment advising services along with student-athlete major exploration, selection, and progression.
Responsible for evaluating technology needs for the student development program and determining the source for funding.
Serves on university committees as needed.
Serves as a liaison to various departments on campus and between the faculty and athletics department.
Participates in the review and approval of summer athletics aid.
Supervise the textbook scholarship program with the assistance of the Athletics Business Office and area textbook retailers.
Maintains working knowledge and adherence to university, conference, and NCAA rules and policies.
Reports all known NCAA violations in accordance with institutional, conference, and NCAA rules and regulations.
Supervises the academic integrity education program for student-athletes.
Oversees the department of athletics class attendance monitoring program.
Meets with recruits as needed.
Manages the student development program’s budget.
Serves as academic advisor to women’s tennis. Provides academic advising, registration, and career services. Conducts weekly academic meetings with students. Communicates with coaches and faculty concerning the academic progress of the team. Monitors and reports NCAA progress toward degree.
Master’s degree and 5 years’ experience working with student athletes.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Prior experience with a Division I or II student athlete support position.
