Green Acres School is seeking a full-time and a part-time teacher of language arts and social studies for fifth and sixth grade students.
Green Acres School is an independent, progressive school for students in Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade on a beautiful 15-acre campus in North Bethesda, Maryland, near Washington, DC. With woods, a stream, athletic fields, playgrounds, and a natural amphitheater, the out-of-doors is an important part of the learning environment. The arts, physical education, and technology are effectively integrated with academic studies in a highly experiential program. In a learning environment that is joyful and supportive as well as challenging, Green Acres School provides authentic learning and leadership experiences. The Washington, DC area also provides many opportunities for rich, off-campus learning. To learn more about Green Acres School, please visit www.greenacres.org.
The fifth and sixth grade language arts program helps students to grow as readers, writers, and thinkers by engaging them in the reading and discussion of novels (like Tuck Everlasting and The Giver), poetry, and short stories, and by having them communicate both creatively and analytically in writing, in speaking, and through projects. The social studies program helps them to understand their own world through the lens of other cultures and societies. The curriculum focuses both on geography and on early societies, potentially including Egypt, Greece, Rome, Mesopotamia, India, China, and/or Africa, and then progresses into a study of Colonial America and the Revolution. Applicants should demonstrate experience in hands-on, project-based learning as well as more traditional forms of instruction. Students currently engage in projects where they develop a website about an accomplished person of color, design a dystopian society, build city-states, write excerpts of a novel in verse, engage in a constitutional convention, and stage a wax museum of Greek gods. Middle school classes cultivate skills through collaboration, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving. Our teachers are able to use best practices in classroom management while also building strong relationships with individual students. The expectation for professional collaboration is high to coordinate efforts as a teaching team, to serve students best, and to build integrated cross-curricular projects. The fulltime position would also include serving as an advisor to a small group of students and as a liaison to the families of those students. The part-time position could be combined with the Middle School Learning Coordinator position into a fulltime role.
Green Acres seeks an experienced classroom teacher with a background in curricular and pedagogical innovation and teaching experience relevant to this position. The successful candidate will possess the following capacities: a sincere love of working with tweens, a passion for history and the English language, a love of teaching, curiosity and a growth mindset, and the ability to provide differentiated instruction. A bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
