African Diaspora Student Program Advisor (Project Coordinator, Senior)
As a team member in Multicultural Affairs, develop programming and leadership development opportunities for historically underrepresented and marginalized student populations. Provide leadership for the retention and support services of students who identify with or within the African Diaspora (African-American, Afro-Caribbean, Black, Multiracial, etc.). Create and maintain communities of support through networking with current students, alumni, staff, and faculty. Provide assistance to students in navigating UW policies and procedures. Provide referrals to campus services for academic and social challenges students face.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Maintain strong connections with other offices, departments and colleagues working at intersections of culture, identity, racial, and social justice. Consult and participate in institutional strategic planning processes and committees. Represent Multicultural Affairs on university committees specific to diversity, equity & inclusion concerns.
Take an active leadership role on institutional and divisional initiatives such as Martin Luther King Jr./Days of Dialogue. Lead and support initiatives and celebrations for diverse student populations such as Indigenous Peoples Week, National Coming Out Week (LGBTQI), Black History Month, Women’s Herstory Month, etc. Train or provide training and awareness programs as requested on issues related to diversity, equity & inclusion. Develop and present student development workshops. Consult on and assist with strategies and co-curricular programs for underrepresented and marginalized students within UW's Strategic Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Plan.
Host welcome receptions and town halls with the assistance of team members. Oversee and assist with inclusive leadership development and engagement programming.
Manage, direct, and evaluate programs and services that encourage students’ personal and social well-being and academic success. Design, implement, and revise short and long-term goals and objectives for programming efforts including student assessment and program evaluation. Prepare reports, data collection, and maintain student files.
Regularly communicate with diversity, equity and inclusion constituency groups, specifically providing updates regarding Multicultural Affairs efforts on recruitment and retention in partnership with UW Admissions and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Outreach to prospective and incoming students to connect them with support services by presenting and serving on admissions panels regarding involvement. Provide consultation and assistance within Multicultural Affairs, and the Center for Student Involvement & Leadership on their recruitment services for underrepresented and marginalized students. Assist with Multicultural Affairs', Admissions', or UW units' on-campus visitation/recruitment programs to promote inclusive representation in those programs.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience: 3 years work-related experience, including student engagement and support experience in higher education.
Demonstrated knowledge, experience, and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of marginalized student populations.
Competency with basic computer applications, email, software programs and database systems, website editing, basic desktop publishing, etc.
Knowledge of successful social media and marketing outreach strategies.
Experience with student programming and evaluation.
Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Master’s Degree in relevant field: student affairs, higher education, public administration, social work, counseling, ethnic studies, etc.
Supervising student employees and volunteers.
