The School of Health Sciences, Human Services, and Nursing (HS2N) houses several departments â€" Health Sciences; Nursing; Social Work; and Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. In addition, it is the academic home of the City University of New York (CUNY) Institute for Health Equity (CIHE), a CUNY-wide institute that coordinates research, teaching, service and community collaboration to eliminate health inequalities and promote health in complex urban settings.
The Associate Dean will serve as a key member of HS2Nâ€™s senior management team, and acts as a liaison between the departments and the Dean's office. S/he supports the Dean in day-to-day functions of the school, including strategic planning, undergraduate and graduate program/curriculum development and review (i.e., course scheduling, review of courses, curriculum maps), assessment of learning outcomes and representing the school to external clientele. S/he will work collaboratively with the Dean, and other senior administrators at the departmental level to identify curricular priorities; develop activities that foster faculty and staff success; support student retention, achievement and progression; cultivate funding opportunities; manage fiscal resources, and enact the mission of the school at the University, college and community level. The Associate Dean reports to the Dean of the School.
Appointment to the position may be accompanied with an appointment at the rank of associate or full professor, and tenure may be granted upon appointment to the faculty title, depending on qualifications and experience.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Academic Programs, Curriculum & Assessment
Manage specific programmatic initiatives within the HS2N portfolio and coordinate this work with offices, programs and initiatives across the college, including enrollment management, student affairs, administration and finance, and institutional advancement
Work in partnership with the CUNY Institute for Health Equity (CIHE) director and staff on CIHE strategic planning, funding, programming and community outreach efforts
Assist Dean with organization of accreditation efforts across multiple HS2N programs; assist departments and programs in meeting requirements established by outside accreditation organizations
Work with the Dean and Chairs to develop, implement and monitor the impact of departmental strategic plans and operational goals
Work with Dean and Chairs to examine curriculum and scheduling processes to promote continuous improvement and alignment with disciplinary, accreditation and occupational frameworks
Coordinate the work of the School Curriculum Committee, which reviews undergraduate and graduate curriculum proposals and provides advisement around curricular matters
Facilitate the growth of current undergraduate and graduate programs, and the development of new interdisciplinary programs and projects
Oversee evaluation and assessment, and work closely with departmental assessment coordinators, the Office of Academic Programs, and the Office of Assessment, to facilitate ongoing assessment at the school, departmental and program level
Work closely with the HS2N Workload Coordinator and the Dean on oversight of faculty workload-related activities, including approval of multiple position forms and management of reassigned time
Engage departmental advising and support staff to facilitate compliance with academic policies, and procedures and resolve academic program issues
Serve as a liaison to other schools, academic units and services on campus (e.g., registrar, admissions, library, IT)
Faculty and Staff Affairs:
Assist with recruiting, selection, and orientation of new faculty and staff in collaboration with the Dean, departmental faculty and staff, Human Resources and the Office of Compliance and Diversity
Engage and support faculty members who are still in graduate school/ â€œABDâ€� to facilitate timely transition to appropriate professorial/instructional role
Collaborate with Chairs and program directors to coordinate and implement faculty and staff professional development opportunities to advance excellence in teaching, administration, scholarship and service
Reinforce faculty research activities and interdisciplinary collaboration as member of school-based Faculty Research Advisory Board (FRAB) and help grow research funding in partnership with the Office of Research & Sponsored Programs
Promote and deepen the use of technologies to enrich teaching, scholarship and student learning in conjunction with the Information Technology Division and the Office of Online Education
Student Support and Success:
Serve as the Deanâ€™s office point person for addressing student complaints
Track, manage, and coordinate timely responses to student concerns and develop plans to address recurring issues
Collaborate with the Division of Student Affairs (i.e., Campus Life, Career Exploration and Development Center, Wellness Education) and the Office of Prestigious Awards to promote student academic achievement, campus engagement, and awareness of merit-based and post-graduate opportunities
Mediate between Chairs, departments and administrative units as needed regarding student-related matters
Budget & Fiscal Duties:
Assist the Dean in preparing and implementing strategic plan and associated budgets, with budgetary forecasting, with managing of the school-wide budget and with efforts to increase external funding
Provide post-award administrative support to departments, as needed, in collaboration with the Office of Research & Sponsored Projects
Representational, External and Community Roles
Work with the Office of Media Relations and Publications to recognize faculty, staff and student achievements and highlight the work and impact of the school and its programs
Work with the Office of Media Relations and Publications and the Information Technology Division to develop HS2Nâ€™s web presence and online marketing strategy
Collaborate with Institutional Advancement to strengthen the connection between HS2N alumni, the school and the college
Serve on college committees, as assigned, to act on behalf of the community, school and programs
Represent the school and attend various local, regional and national events/meetings to deepen community networks
Cultivate and sustain community â€"based and external partnerships to expand the schoolâ€™s impact and reach
Performs additional duties as requested by the Dean and represents Dean as appropriate if the Dean is unavailable.
This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.
PhD degree in allied health or public health field, postdoctoral training preferred.
Strong management experience
Excellent written, oral, interpersonal and intercultural communication skills
Experience teaching in a University setting
Experience managing multiple staff and collaborating with academic researchers and clinical providers across allied health fields
Ability to work with colleagues from diverse programs and backgrounds
Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external constituents
Strong strategic planning, program development and assessment skills.
University experience preferred
