We are currently seeking a visionary Director of College Guidance to manage the Upper School college placement process with strategy and imagination, within the context of the Goals and Criteria that define a Sacred Heart education.
Position: Director of College Guidance Reports to: Upper School Head and Head of School FLSA Status: Exempt
Enthusiasm for working with high school students and demonstrated success in implementing scaffolded, organized, student-centered approaches to the college search and application process;
Plans, designs, and implements college counseling programs and events for students and families to assist them in proper planning for college.
Develops and implements successful new college counseling strategies and programs;
Works to build relationships with students, knowing their academic profiles, interests and passions; consults with academic dean, advisers, and faculty; advises students on academic and extra- and co-curricular choices;
Communicates regularly and frequently with students and parents regarding the college admission process;
Assists in researching and drafting lists of potential colleges that meet criteria set by families; provides recommendations for standardized testing and test preparation; writes comprehensive recommendation letters
Builds and fosters strong relationships with selective college admission offices throughout the United States and abroad;
Oversees visits to colleges and fairs, and hosts college representatives on the SH campus
Represents Sacred Heart Greenwich through active participation in college counseling professional organizations and participates actively in meetings, committees, and workshops;
Stays current with trends in college admission, higher education, national testing, and athletic recruitment;
Maintains current knowledge of the college financial aid process and works closely to support families applying for financial aid;
Manages college counseling office data, systems, and records, while ensuring the confidentiality of all information;
Oversees and guides faculty letters of recommendation;
Manages the college counseling staff; evaluates performance and provides professional development opportunities;
Develops a college guidance curriculum that connects to the school’s health and wellness program.
Analyzes college decision data for regular reports to Head of School and Board of Trustees
Qualifications: Three-plus years of experience in college counseling, preferably with an independent school and/or in a college’s admission office.
The candidate should be able to provide a portfolio of written work that reflects current college application practices. Candidate is energetic, approachable, knowledgeable, and eager to be an active member of a dynamic learning community. Candidate must be willing to attend community events (e.g. school play, athletic events, retreats) as a way to support the student experience.
