Established in 1929, The Orme School is a unique, college-preparatory, co-educational boarding school for grades 8 through 12, set on 300 acres in rural Arizona. Remote, but easily accessible to Phoenix, Flagstaff, Prescott and Sedona. Orme offers the best of Southwest. Our mission is to develop sound character, scholastic growth, and intellectual curiosity, as well as enable students to succeed at the college of their choice, and in life. Our challenging curriculum features a combination of classroom instruction, hands-on learning and both environmental and aesthetic awareness. From the academic program to residential and community life, the guiding principles of Excellence, Tradition, and Character are applied to every facet of an Orme education. We welcome applications from candidates who are eager to live among and teach young men and women from all over the world.
The Orme School seeks an experienced, collaborative, and energetic teacher to join the English Department for the upcoming 2021-22 academic year. Qualified candidates will have a bachelor's degree in English or related field (master's preferred) and at least 3-6 years of classroom teaching experience with the ability to teach the breadth of a high school English curriculum.
Orme believes in a whole child approach to education in a safe, but rugged environment. The ability to pivot is primary to our community, and helped Orme stay fully open during the 2020-21 school year with the majority of our students on campus and in class. While maintaining strict Covid protocols, the school created ways to offer our traditional events including the Dorothy Swain Fine Arts Festival, a week-long celebration of the arts, and Caravan, our all school outdoor experiential capstone. During the year students took advantage of the natural resources, our on-site horse program, and the amazing hiking trails that surround the school.
Successful candidates will have an exceptional ability to develop and maintain positive and healthy relationships with a diverse range of adolescents. Experience in coaching, visual or performing arts, outdoor education or other specialized interests are assets. Candidates should be prepared to work with our students well beyond the classroom, as faculty members serve as advisors, residential duty-team members, coaches, and mentors. Orme educators are asked to teach five classes, participate in two after-school activity programs and be a part of a residential program with one night of duty per week and one weekend of duty per month. The opportunity to incorporate and share individual interests with the community exists in multiple areas. Professional development is offered and encouraged. If you are a multi-faceted educator with a desire for adventure, community involvement and a taste of the Wild West, we welcome your application.
Additional Salary Information: Housing and meals provided through residential program.
