UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education (CPE) is the academic division of the university dedicated to workforce and career development. CPE helps professional working adults upskill, reskill and advance their careers. CPE partners with campus schools, colleges and faculty to create global access to the distinctive knowledge and resources of UC Davis, and also works with employers and local experts to develop programs targeted to regional needs for economic development. More than 1,500 professionals teach in a wide array of specialized practice domains, including outstanding faculty from across UC Davis. Last year, CPE recorded nearly 74,000 enrollments in more than 4,400 classes, serving students from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. Courses are offered onsite and online in a variety of formats, including short courses, conferences, certificate programs and self-supporting master's degrees. Courses are open to the public and offered on a contract basis through partnerships with private companies, government agencies and international peer universities. CPE also manages the university's relationship with Coursera, a leading MOOC platform, and has generated more than a million enrollments through this partnership. CPE is completely self-supporting, generating more than $40 million in annual revenue from course fees, public and private contracts and grants. CPE employs approximately 180 employees (career, academic, contract and limited) and more than 60 student employees during peak periods and draws on the expertise of approximately 1,700 instructors.

Responsibilities The Assistant Dean/Chief Operating Officer is a senior advisor to the Dean and senior business executive for the division. Plans and directs all administrative, financial and operational activities. With the Dean and Associate Deans, leads short- and long-term strategic planning and operations with particular focus on driving growth for an organization with approximately 200 FTE and USD $40M budget. Manages all internal business operations including finance, IT, real estate/facilities, market research and business intelligence. Develops/consults on new business and funding models, evaluates financial viability of major divisional initiatives, and leads selected business growth initiatives. Oversees CPE budget planning and forecasting, with dual accountability for the quality of budgetary data and forecasts developed in consultation with academic chairs and directors. Leads technology strategic planning and implements business-transformative systems. Establishes and leads business intelligence unit providing data and insights to support executive level steering, assess the business viability of major new initiatives, and support data-driven decision-making throughout the organization. Co-develops/co-leads new campus-serving market research and business consulting function to assess, model and recommend new self-supporting online graduate degrees. Responsible for understanding campus financial and technology issues, responding to UC and campus requests for information, and representing the division on Assistant Dean's Council. Leads multiple units and teams, providing visionary leadership along with effective coaching and performance management.
Master's Degree in Business, Finance or related field and/or equivalent experience.
8 or more years of progressive leadership experience, including experience in a senior finance or business operations role.
Experience with financial modeling, forecasting and predictive analytics; excellent quantitative, analytical, and abstract reasoning skills.
Knowledge and experience to steer the strategic use of technology at the enterprise level to achieve organizational goals and provide a strong platform for growth.
Knowledge of business strategies and business modeling approaches; demonstrated capacity to serve as a strategic business partner and consultant to product/program leaders in an entrepreneurial setting.
Experience leading strategic planning and integrated performance management systems and processes.
Experience leading complex projects, including project scoping, strategic implementation, and associated change management initiatives.
Experience and exceptional skill in managing/leading people in a consultative, team-oriented environment.
Computer proficiency with MS Office suite and advanced skill in use of spreadsheet software.
Experience in an entrepreneurial university setting preferred.
Knowledge of public budgeting and contracting methods-experience applying business transformation principles.
Ownership/accountability of a Profit and Loss statement and steering an organization towards meeting financial goals.
Experience steering the build of technology infrastructure in support of a broad organization wide initiative.
