The Department of Counseling, Health and Kinesiology (CHK) is part of the College of Education and Human Development at Texas A&M University-San Antonio. The Department is committed to extending the knowledge base of Counseling, Health and Kinesiology through a combination of scholarly inquiry, reflective practices and student-centered learning. The faculty and staff are dedicated to preparing behavior analysts, counselors,Â and health/kinesiology professionals to meet the challenges of a growing and diverse community. The department consists of undergraduate programs in kinesiology, human services (pending approval), and applied behavior analysis (pending approval) as well as graduate programs in clinical mental health counseling, school counseling, marriage and family counseling, kinesiology, and applied behavior analysis (pending approval).
Department Chair Role:
The department chair reports directly to the Dean of the College of Education & Human Development. Â This is a 12-month administrative faculty position responsible for all aspects of the CHK department. The work consists of varied management, supervisory and instructional duties requiring excellent management skills and the ability to work within a complex environment. Performance in this position is measured by student and faculty success, student enrollment, departmental research and grant productivity, individual scholarship, and the overall success of the programs in the department.
The successful candidate will have knowledge and familiarity with the disciplines in the department as well as knowledge of the CACREP accreditation processes and related requirements. In addition, the successful candidate will have knowledge and experience in the following areas:
Preparation and management of budgets.
Implementation of innovation
Effective use of technology
Effective pedagogical practice
Effective use of instructional technology
Innovative strategies used to deliver effective student learning outcomes.
Course design and development
Delegation of responsibility and authority in the management of operations
Making timely decisions to meet deadlines
Incorporation of data-driven problem solving in decision-making
Team building and managing interpersonal relations with various internal and external constituencies
Performing oral and written communications
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Implement and monitor the compliance of the department to A&M-SA departmental and general academic policies
Facilitate the long-term development of the department within the context of the university vision, mission, and goals while working to ensure the department's is reflective of external changes in the associated disciplines
Coordinate the development, revision, implementation, and evaluation of departmental curriculum
Facilitate the collection of program data to ensure the department meets any accreditation standards
Perform annual evaluation of faculty members and staff
Facilitate the management of the department to include direct supervision over department faculty and/or clerical staff and graduate assistants
Schedules and preside over department meetings
Serve as the primary departmental contact for institutional advancement, recruitment, and retention efforts
Facilitate the implementation and maintenance of catalog, website, and policy revisions which address departmental curriculum issues
Evaluate, recruit and recommend candidates for the appointment of faculty to the Dean and perform appropriate follow-up regarding candidates
Monitor student progress, retention, and graduation rates
Use data-driven strategies to increase student persistence and retention
Develop class schedules for course offerings in collaboration with faculty
Prepare, recommend, and oversee the department budget
Evaluate faculty and staff annual performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions.
Adjudicate and respond to faculty and student disputes
Teach graduate courses with a reduced course load as per the university policy
Serve as liaison for marketing materials and distribution
Facilitate student advisement for the related programs
Seek and encourage the pursuit of external funding to advance department and institutional mission
Appoints ad hoc/standing committees and monitor reporting to meet deadlines
Manage any related accreditation process
Serve as a member of the college leadership team
Provide support to faculty for professional development and scholarly work
Serve as an advocate for strengthening programs in the department and faculty
Perform additional duties as assigned by the Dean of the College
Required Education and Experience:
Doctoral degree in Counseling, Health, Kinesiology, or a related field
18 graduate hours in each field in which candidate will teach
Minimum of five years of university teaching experience including advising and supervising graduate students
Experience working with culturally diverse populations
Preferred Education and Experience:
Eligibility for appointment at the Full Professor level
Evidence of teaching, service, and professional development potential/productivity, commensurate with rank
Demonstrated ability of adaptive leadership with executive leadership functions
Demonstrated ability to work as an independent member of a small and highly interdependent team
Strong written and verbal communication skills, must be able to connect with a wide range of stakeholders
Demonstrated federal grant and foundation grant writing success
Demonstrated record of scholarly publications at the national/international level
Must be future-focused, results-driven, fluent in using data for decision making
Preference given to candidates with leadership experience
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Preference given to candidates with documented leadership experience
Preference given to data/evaluation-oriented individuals with highly effective facilitation skills
Preference given to candidates who have documented experience with communities of color
