JOB DESCRIPTION: The High School Counselor reports to the Head of the High School, and is responsible for guiding students to achievement of the Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) and the 2019-2024 Strategic Plan, including:
The HS Counselor supports all students’ academic, career, and social-emotional development in the following ways:
Develop organizational, time management, and study habits in neurodiverse students
Develop self-advocacy and resilience skills in neurodiverse students
Review student documentation and collaborate with faculty/administration to determine appropriate accommodations and/or academic interventions
Collaborate with College Advisor and Post-Secondary Transition Team for the following:
Quarterly, grade appropriate, post-secondary presentations for students
Bi-annual, post-secondary presentations for families
Collaborate with school personnel to create and edit college admissions essays
Facilitate career interest inventory to guide students in finding personal, professional pathways
Write college and career letters of recommendation as-needed
Collaborate with College Advising Team and families to identify “best fit” colleges
Connect students with resources for scholarships
Wellness Advising: Collaborate with school Leadership Team to develop and implement training and support for the the Wellness Initiative.
Provide short-term crisis counseling and counseling referrals for High School
Solution focused; provide referrals for outside services to families as necessary (crisis)
Facilitate student/teacher conversations over classroom issues that impede learning
Collaborate with teachers when appropriate on class accommodations
Consult with counseling professionals about current and potential students
Collaborate to create Peer Counseling with Middle School Counselor
Participates in Sterne HS student events as needed
Participates in Sterne School Admissions and promotional events as needed
Empowering and supporting diverse student body
Knowledge of school counseling best practices, ethics, and law
Present flexible approach, expect change and ambiguity
Create a culture of college and career excitement throughout school
Attend Faculty Meetings
Minimum Requirements (Applicants must meet ONE of the following requirements):
1. A master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in school psychology; and a 1200 hour internship of which 600 hours must have been in an elementary, middle or secondary school setting, provided that when the internship is of less than 1200 hours and/or 600 hours in a school setting, one additional year of supervised professional work as a school psychologist in a school setting shall meet the required internship experience.
2. A master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in educational psychology, counseling psychology or closely related field in a psychology profession that included graduate courses in human learning and development, psycho-educational assessment, individual differences, remedial and special education, principles of legal and ethical issues in the field of education or psychology, statistics, research methodology; and a 1200 hour internship of which 600 hours must have been in an elementary, middle or secondary school setting, provided that when the internship is of less than 1200 hours and/or 600 hours in a school setting, one additional year of supervised professional work in a psychology profession in a school setting shall meet the required internship experience
3. Current School Psychologist license or certification; or
4. Current Nationally Certified School Psychologist certification from the National Association of School Psychologists.
