The Chemistry Instructor is responsible for teaching all levels of our college chemistry courses from Introduction to Chemistry through Organic Chemistry II. Additionally, the Chemistry Instructor is responsible for oversight of the chemistry labs and serves as the departmental Chemical Hygiene Officer (DCHO).
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for instruction and facilitating student learning:
Develop outcome-based course syllabi that share with students the course standards, policies and learning objectives
Be actively engaged in student retention and success
Recognize and respond appropriately to diverse student populations and their learning needs
Develop and use supplementary learning materials and resources.
Assess student learning
Use evidence-based pedagogical practices focused on student learning
Develop curriculum and instructional delivery modes using traditional and innovative methods.
Collaborate with other faculty to determine scheduling of traditional/synchronous course offerings.
Serve as academic advisor for students in the math-science division in collaboration with other full-time faculty members.
Collaborate with other teaching faculty, laboratory instructors, supplemental instruction leaders, staff and administration to ensure that all students receive instruction and supervision that promote learning and personal growth.
Maintain chemistry-associated laboratory and inventory on both campuses.
Participate in division and college activities.
Help promote and build math and science programs and committees.
Participate actively in professional development to support and broaden background.
Represent Bay College and higher education through advocacy and service in the community in which you live.
Train adjunct instructors and student workers on laboratory processes and chemical safety.
Regularly review and update all academic laboratory procedures and documentation, archiving outdated materials as necessary.
Identify all chemicals with permissible exposure limits (PELs), create SOP’s for all chemicals used in an academic setting with PELs, and coordinate all exposure limit testing.
Serve on the chemical safety committee.
Explore the broad range of uses for emerging technologies in instruction
Strengthen the division’s capacity to offer instruction through flexible delivery modes including Zoom, asynchronous online content, iTV, Blackboard, virtual lab content, etc.
Participate in collegial discussions regarding a wide range of educational issues such as general education, competency-based instruction, student outcomes assessment, etc.
Participate in college activities outside the classroom including, but not limited to, professional development opportunities, student events, student organizations, etc.
Establish working relationships with local K-12 faculty
Participate in community activities
Provide intervention activities for at risk students
Any other duties as assigned
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
Master’s Degree in chemistry
Teaching experience in chemistry
Demonstrated literacy in information technology and computer use
Demonstrated skill in effective written and oral communications
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS PREFERRED:
Ph.D. in chemistry
College-level teaching experience in chemistry
Experience teaching online chemistry with labs strongly preferred
Additional Salary Information: Placement on the salary schedule is dependent upon education level, years of teaching and relative work experience.
