Eastside Catholic School is a Catholic faith-based educational community where students in grades six through 12 learn to integrate their thinking and believing with action in ways that encourage intellectual excellence, nurture relationships and inspire a life of leadership and service to others. Founded by parents in 1980, the school is governed by an elected board of trustees. It is the only seven-year, co-educational Catholic school on the Eastside, and offers a comprehensive college preparatory curriculum. Eastside Catholic School enrolls 840 students, employs 120 faculty and staff members and has an alumni base of over 4,600. The middle school counselor works with students, faculty, parents, administrators, the Student Services Team (comprised of middle school and high school counselors) and mental health and related professionals in the community. The middle school counselor is responsible for guiding students’ academic, social, emotional and personal lives in grades six through eight, a caseload of approximately 250 students. Although the school does not strictly apply the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model, the middle school counselor follows a comprehensive school counseling program model, as appropriate, to maximize student success and collaborates regularly with the high school counselors for an integrated approach to mental health.
The counselor is available to meet with students, faculty and parents. The counselor role performs duties largely independently, in consultation with the director of student services, middle school principal, middle school assistant principal, classroom teachers and other counselors. The middle school counselor is responsible for communication with the middle school administration regarding issues of concern. Involvement in the entire life of the middle school student is expected.
Knowledge of adolescent development, social-emotional issues of students ages 10 to 14, parenting models and issues, and a variety of counseling models and strategies
Strong interpersonal and group skills including excellent listening, humor, tact, intuition, keen observation and confidentiality
Eagerness to know middle school students by greeting students before school, mingling with students at lunch and being present to students throughout the day
Knowledgeable and skilled in addressing such social and emotional issues as conflict among students, parent concerns, ADHD, grief, divorce, anxiety, difficulties with self-regulation, depression, self-harm, suicidal ideation and learning differences and disabilities
Knowledgeable and skilled in supporting students who struggle academically
Ability to teach organization, time management, calendars and other executive functioning skills in a positive and friendly way, in groups as well as individually
Interact with others, including grade-level teams, to support struggling students as well as the Student Services Team, comprised of middle and high school counselors
Strong communication and public-speaking skills
Willingness to lead parent meetings, speak to classes and present at school-wide events
Organizational and record-keeping skills
Knowledge, skills and ability to assess the needs of the school community
Familiarity with state laws regarding child abuse
Familiarity with available state, county and local services and judgment to determine when outside referral is appropriate
Familiarity with test batteries, needs assessments and interpreting their results
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Master’s degree in school counseling, mental health counseling, social work or psychology required
Special education training and/or experience strongly preferred
Computer literacy, especially Microsoft Office including Teams, OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint; Rediker, Naviance and Canvas experience is a plus
Salary will be determined by years of experience and extent of education.
