JOB SUMMARY: The Upper School Dean of Students is responsible for advancing the mission of the School in terms of the student behavior and culture as a part of The Stony Brook School’s programs. This individual will work closely with the Middle School Dean of Students to advance efforts in student culture, school safety, and communication with families. This individual would teach one or two classes within his or her area of expertise. The Upper School Dean of Students will supervise an Administrative Assistant and Assistant Dean of Students. must be a committed follower of Christ and be comfortable acknowledging and adhering to the basic tenets of the Christian Faith as stated in the Platform and Principles of The Stony Brook School.
must have prior teaching experience, particularly at the Upper School level.
must have a Bachelor's degree (postgraduate degree preferred).
should have previous experience working with students as an Upper School Director, Dean of Students, Grade Level Dean, or other student-facing administrative position.
should be highly organized, a strong leader, and be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with all levels of constituents.
CAPABILITIES ILLUSTRATED: The duties described below are to serve as guidelines for, not limitations to, the job of Upper School Dean of Students. The Head of School may call on the Upper School Dean of Students to serve the community in other ways from time to time.
Work with a team to design and deliver schoolwide programming through advisory and assembly.
Annually review the handbook and work to promote and enforce the policies of the School.
Oversee and mentor the Prefect Program (student leadership for the Upper School)
Act as the primary point of contact for the restorative discipline process in the violation of major school rules for students in grades 10 - 12.
Supervise attendance policies and follow up with major violations.
Ensure compliance with state-mandated drills and reports.
Proactively advocate for community members who are discriminated against and act on concerns.
Work with the Counseling Department to provide proactive and reactive support to specific students.
Welcome new families within the Upper School and serve as a point of connection for families within the division.
In coordination with the Academic Dean, meet with teachers in grade-level teams on a regular basis to do internal professional development and discuss student behavioral concerns.
Think and act strategically about division-level communication, including assembly announcements, emails, meetings with families, and social media.
