Full-time School Nurse

Watkinson School, offering inventive teaching to Hartford and surrounding communities since 1881, seeks a full-time School Nurse. Reporting to the Dean of Students, the School Nurse will be responsible for School medical policy and practices administration and for the School’s day-to-day medical needs of our students  

Responsibilities include:

• Serving as a member of a school services team with other school professionals, such as teachers, deans, counselors. Additionally, working closely with food service personnel, athletic personnel, and others to support the health and wellness of students
• Providing health-related education to students and staff in both individual and group settings
• Monitoring immunizations, managing communicable diseases and assessing the school environment so as to prevent injury and ensure safety
• Overseeing infection control measures
• Actively participating in school safety plans that address school violence, bullying, and emergencies that may occur at school
• Overseeing medication administration, health care procedures, and the development of healthcare plans
• Management and maintenance of health records ensuring compliance with Connecticut state laws with a focus on immunizations and physicals
• Perform yearly mandated health screenings (vision, hearing, and postural exams) of students
• Provide training to School staff for off-campus trips with students (including preparation of medical release forms, medications and first aid kits)
• Perform screenings related to drug testing for school van drivers
• Seeing and evaluating students with medical concerns during the regular school day
• Making decisions related to the delegation of healthcare tasks as directed by state laws and professional practice guidance
• Providing health advice to school educational teams
• Assisting families with locating outside care, as needed
