The Department of Communication began as a program of what is now Marshall College in the 1970's. It became the first Communication department at the University of California system in 1982, and is now among the best-known communication departments nationwide and worldwide. The Department is a unique academic community of scholars and media artists from disciplines across the Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts, and famous for its cutting edge work in communication scholarship and practice, emphasizing research of broad intellectual and social significance, and have a strong focus on scholarship that deals with issues of democracy, diversity, justice and social change. The Undergraduate major in Communication is among the most popular at UCSD, the department's Ph.D. program, with about 50 current students, is known for the innovative scholars it produces.
The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) who reports to the Chair and the Assistant Dean, uses advanced administrative concepts and organization objectives to resolve complex issues. Manages, plans, administers and coordinates the administrative operations of the Communication Department, the operations of which are significantly complex and broad in scope. Performance of administrative operations activities are the predominant focus of position; supervise professional and support staff in academic and human resources personnel, student services, fiscal management, facilities and communications. Performs short and long term planning for the function. Regularly works on highly complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals result in additional costs, and serious delays in overall schedules.
Advanced knowledge of University rules and regulations, processes, protocols and procedures for budget, accounting and fund management, and / or personnel management. Strong personnel management skills including understanding of issues working within a complex higher education organization.
Proven leadership and management experience in a large, complex department with proven ability to analyze, interpret and apply management principles, practices and techniques in the conduct of business for a large multi discipline, public and privately funded academic research department.
Advanced interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills.
Advanced skills in short- and long-term strategic planning, analysis, problem-solving and customer service. Strong organizational and negotiation skills with expertise in clarifying and resolving conflict situations and developing attainable goals and procedures.
Demonstrated understanding of ethical issues in a University setting and the ability to instill and maintain appropriate standards of behavior and feedback. Demonstrated high level skill in assessing needs and developing strategies to support diversity and inclusion.
Knowledge of UC policies and procedures as they affect academic and staff personnel, accounting, contract and grants, student affairs, purchasing, equipment and space inventory, labor relations, gifts and donations, independent consultants/contractor agreements, and other functions.
