College Counselor (Part-time)

Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School (CESJDS), an independent school for grades K-12, seeks a part-time, experienced College Counselor. CESJDS is nationally renowned for the quality of education in general, Judaics and co-curricular studies; for the community that has been created for students, families and staff; innovation in preparing students to be successful in the 21^st Century; and for outstanding facilities and resources. CESJDS is home to an educational program that combines learning with experiencing our rich traditions and with the acquisition of skills that enable our students to become successful and effective community members, leaders and workers.

The College Counselor will work as part of a team of experienced counselors and will report to the Director of College Guidance. The Counseling team supports students and families in the High School, which is comprised, of approximately 375 students.

Responsibilities:

Counseling and supporting juniors and seniors in the college selection process including course registration, developing college lists and advising throughout the application process
Working with students individually and in advisory groups
Building relationships with parents and college admissions officers
Writing letters of recommendation
Conducting programs for students, parents and college representatives both during the day and in the evening
Maintaining a network of colleagues through membership in professional organizations at the local, regional and national level and visiting college campuses to remain current on issues and trends in college admissions

Qualifications:

Minimum of a bachelor’s degree with a master’s degree preferred
Preference for 3-5 years of relevant experience working in a high school setting or in a college admissions office
Strong verbal, speaking, written and interpersonal skills
Proficient in MS Office and college advising software (Naviance, SCOIR, etc.)
Student centered with focus on collaboration and teamwork

Work Environment:

Faculty may be asked to perform their work responsibilities on campus and/or at home. In both settings, the faculty members are required to maintain a professional environment.
While on campus, classes may be operating either in person or in an alternative setting. Faculty are expected to be present and accessible for the entire school day (contracted hours), regardless of the setting.
