Academic Advisor

Job Description:

The purpose of this position is to provide high quality academic advising to all students at St. Cloud State University. We take a holistic approach to serving students at SCSU. Advisors incorporate a coaching mindset into all of their interactions, connecting them to resources and follow-up support where necessary. Each advisor is assigned a caseload of students from a particular school or college and is available to answer advising questions throughout their time at SCSU. During the student's first year, the advisor will work with students to develop a graduation plan and ensure they understand how to navigate the institution. Students who are not in good academic standing work with the advisor to create success plans. Advisors play a role in implementing and planning orientation events to welcome new incoming students. They are integral to ensuring students at St. Cloud State University understand how to complete their degrees in the most timely and efficient manner and provide individualized student services through their coaching and outreach.

Responsibilities and Results:

• Student Advising

  • Provide holistic academic advising services to assigned caseload of students and students in assigned programs, including creating graduation plans, making referrals, ensuring accurate course selections, and increasing student's sense of academic and social community as a Husky.
  • Implement outreach initiatives to meet unit retention goals, including serving as advising representative on Student Success Team for assigned first-year students.
  • Determine service needs of students and provide mentoring/coaching support or connect with coaching services.
  • Serve as a member of the SEM team, participating in student outreach initiatives as needed.
• Orientation Planning and Implementation

  • Work with A&ST team and campus partners to plan and implement Huskies Advising and Registration Days and Huskies First Four.
• Collaborate with Departments within a school, college or student service area

  • Ensure advising templates and materials are up to date for accurate advising.
  • Inform team of any changes to curriculum in assigned area.

  • Provide advising resources and training to assigned area.

  • Work collaboratively with staff in other student service areas including Records and Registration, Financial Aid, Career Center, Multicultural Student Services, Center for International Studies, Residence Life, Student Life and Development, and Academic Affairs to support students.

• Area of Specialization (e.g., First Year Students, Transfer Students, Non-Traditional Studies, International Students)

  • Advocate for, and provide advising and orientation resources tailored to specific student populations to assist with their transition to the institution.
• Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

• Master's Degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Education or related field and one year of professional advising experience. Or a Bachelor's degree and three years of professional experience working with students in an advising, admissions, financial aid, records, or related role in a higher education context.
• Knowledge of college student development theory, academic advising, coaching, and orientation.
• Experience working with students in a higher education setting
• Experience with interpreting complex student data (transcripts, degree audits, assessment scores) and using in an academic advising context.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Familiarity with higher education system and current trends in student retention, advising, and orientation.
• Demonstrated experience and competency working with culturally, ethnically and linguistically diverse students.
• Demonstrated ability to work with underrepresented students and help them to overcome barriers to success.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues across departmental lines.

Preferred Qualifications:

• At least two years of professional experience working as an academic advisor, or academic coach.
• Demonstrated experience and knowledge using and/or interpreting ISRS systems, degree audits, student success management platforms (EAB's Navigate, Starfish, etc.), Microsoft Office Suite and shared cloud spaces (OneDrive or Google Drive)
