Position Overview and Qualifications
SAA seeks an Assistant Head of School who is passionate about working with a dynamic faculty, engaged families, and inspiring students and excited to share his/her educational leadership and expertise with the SAA community.
The Assistant Head of School is the secondary leader in the school and part of a 14 person administrative team. It is a year round position. The Assistant Head reports to the Head of School and serves as the Chief Instructional Officer of the school, responsible for the supervision and support of all teachers and instructional staff.
The Assistant Head supports highly qualified teachers and promotes a culture of growth that meaningfully advances the school’s priorities and strategic initiatives.
Further, the Assistant Head must:
Demonstrate a belief in and commitment to an inclusive, equitable, and diverse school community
Possess an understanding and appreciation of gifted children, their capabilities, insights, thoughtfulness, intensities and humor
Display an enthusiasm that energizes a love of learning throughout the community
Exhibit forward-thinking and reflective leadership, bringing innovative ideas to life
Enjoy collaborating with faculty while also effectively discerning appropriate times for decisive and expedient decision making
Importantly, the Assistant Head needs to display a strong leadership presence and effectively communicate the mission and ethos of Science & Arts Academy to all members of the community. A successful Assistant Head will establish and maintain strong relationships with all constituencies, becoming immersed in the school’s culture, needs, and opportunities.
Support teachers in the development and implementation of curriculum and appropriate assessment tools, including vertical alignment, horizontal integration, and anti-bias curriculum
Work closely with the Educational Leadership Team in identifying the curricular and programmatic needs of the school and ensuring curricular and instructional continuity within and across grade levels
Conduct observations and evaluations and provide direct support for teachers
Interface closely with the Student Support Coordinator and School Counselor regarding student accommodations and social/emotional concerns
Help develop class schedules to meet appropriate curricular and programmatic needs
Partner with teachers to set and evaluate annual professional development goals
Facilitate student conflict resolution and disciplinary intervention when necessary
Coordinate the mentoring of new faculty and develop appropriate orientation materials
Cultivate opportunities for students to create, explore, and take intellectual risks
Meet regularly with teachers and grade level teams
Address parent concerns and questions and facilitate/mediate conversations between parents and the appropriate faculty member(s)
Participate in parent meetings and conferences as needed
In conjunction with the Head, read and edit report cards and ensure proper report card protocol
Actively participate in the hiring and interviewing process for teaching positions
Be a visible presence in the daily life of the school and an engaged participant at major school functions and events
Other duties as needed to achieve SAA’s educational goals and advance the school’s mission
Demonstrated experience in education administration and leadership
Demonstrated experience in evaluating, supporting, and coaching faculty and staff
Excellent communication, listening and interpersonal skills
Superior writing and editing skills
Effective conflict resolution skills for working with students and adults
Success in organizing and leading committees
Experience working with gifted students
A graduate degree in Administration, Leadership, Education, or other relevant area of study
