Under supervision, incumbent will assist postdoctoral scholar and graduate students in studies of role of GLO-1 gene in rodent models. Duties to include the following: lab animal husbandry, mouse colony maintenance, genotyping, injections, surgery, and assisting in initial data analysis. Perform stereotaxic intracranial surgical procedures in mice to prepare for testing in the ICSS paradigm. Collect, record, and catalog data using specialized data acquisition software on laboratory computers (Software includes but is not limited to: Med Associates, Coulbourn, Knosys, DSI, San Diego Instruments, and Noldus Ethovision). Assist in analyzing data collected from behavioral experiment using Excel; learn analysis software specific for the laboratory. Handle mice and rats.
Graduation from high school or a GED and two (2) years of laboratory experience or two (2) years of college, including courses in Biology, organic/inorganic Chemistry and one (1) year of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Proficient ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, etc., with the willingness and ability to update and increase skills and knowledge as needed.
Coursework in organic/inorganic chemistry and laboratory techniques (pipetting, solution preparation, dosage calculation, etc.) or equivalent experience with calculating dosages, injection volumes, and dissolving a variety of chemicals.
Thorough working knowledge of the Animal Care Program's required husbandry practices.
Ability to perform stereotaxic intracranial surgical procedures in mice to prepare for testing in the ICSS paradigm.
Ability to assist in analyzing data collected from behavioral experiment using Excel and learn analysis software specific for the laboratory.
Proven experience to hand score/record behavioral animal data for non-automated testing paradigms.
Bachelor's Degree in related area.
Experience with lab mouse colony maintenance.
Working knowledge of laws and regulations that govern the housing and management of laboratory animals as applied to the University of California. Sensitivity to the needs of laboratory animals in compliance to AAALAC standards.
Experience with laboratory computers and specialized data collection software (Med Associates, San Diego Instruments, Noldus, DSI).
Knowledge of stereotaxic surgery.
